Never used the the follow to move arounf the map, usually I select the whole squad and they move around kinda fine, trying to see if it would solve pathing issues and what I got left of occasional group splitting, this happened:
They will just push Ruka back while she's trying to cross the water. Reloading the save would actually get things a little better, but the problem persists, if you try to click somewhere forward you'll see.

The following was fine till some point, everyone would just kinda intellectually move along their leader. I remember because i was impressed by the level of refinement. Then at some point it has become more of a bump-the-leader-off-their-course game. If you'll follow your group around when following w\o formation, you'll see they're always running into their leader, interfering with their path 90% of the time.
I think it was somewhere around engine migration, and i guess this is how it goes now. And now it's also clear why formations were added.

I guess it is what it is then, thanks.
I messed with the formation but I found out it only changed after reloading a save (I thought it never worked till that very same day I posted), which is a bit inconvenient, but oh well, I will stick to the old habits.
