Okay, I was playing Kenshi, recruited some people, made some more money, was saving all the time, y'know, the usual. Got to Shark I think it was and as I tried to save, the game crashed. I was like, meh I saved about 3 minutes ago just after I beat up some bandits.
Turns out it put me about half an hour.
FML. Why'd it do this to me? No crashdump generated btw.......

*Insert witty remark here*
I had the same thing happen once; even though I was constantly saving the game, and it was acting normally just like it really was saving, it eventually crashed and upon starting the game back up and loading the save it seemed as if none of those saves from that session actually "took". I think it was after that I started seeing double the usual number of shopkeepers (and possibly guards) in each shop, though that might or might not be related to this issue.
I couldn't duplicate the problem afterwards, and continued to play quite a bit more without more crashes beyond the known random crash with the "thread tried to read from or write to virtual memory it doesn't have access to" crashdump, which is supposed to be fixed in the next release. The doubled shopkeepers went away after that too, possibly just because I was constantly moving on to new towns which hadn't been generated yet (probably how it works, though I'm not sure).
Oh, probably not the best place to post this since it's an unrelated issue, but I found that in my game where I'd visited most of the towns, each time I loaded the save the local area would be empty of all city NPCs. After several seconds, they would finally start popping into existence. This problem has gotten worse as I explored further, such that it takes nearly a minute before NPCs start appearing.
I'm guessing this is probably due to the game loading data on all NPCs in all towns you've been to. Might be best to at least prioritize the initial NPC data loading to work on the local area first before loading up the rest of them.
