Started game on 0.98.51, imported on update, didn't start base construction until 0.98.55.
Mods in use: In-game biome map, more building, copper ore drills, interesting recruits, 256 recruitment limit

from experimenting more and finding other problems, i.e. spots that became inaccessible because I walled off the way onto the hill, it seems that this is likely the problem. It was also kinda dumb cause the guy couldn't move off his hill because I just walled off access to the only way off the ledge he was on. So in an area largely blocked off by terrain features cutting off the means access to this area with my wall seemed to trigger wall termites.

I still hate wall termites though.
