Auto-Save not working as advertised

Is it just completely random? To add to the brutality of the game?

How many times I have lost an hour or more of game time because for some arcane reason the auto-save function decided to believe in its own definition of what "15 minutes" means.

Eventually it saves. Often it even adheres to the set interval. But every now and then it just stops working.
