I'm not sure if this is a bug or what. I have an old character that I've been rolling over through the updates. He is basically an unstoppable killing machine with a katana. I wanted to make him an unstoppable killing machine while swinging anything from katana to heavy. So, after the .32 update I decided to try and train up the other weapon skills and see how long it would take. After four in-game days of wiping out towns with various weapons not a single weapon skill had increased but katana. Katana only went up when using katanas of course (from 51 to 52). I basically slaughtered everyone in a town with one weapon and then switched to something else and repeated the test on another town.
I know I need tougher enemies to raise the big skills but I figured the weapon skill would go up through basic combat successes like smacking four dudes at once and killing them all instantly with a weak plank.
Stats are:
Strength - 87
Dexterity - 61
Attack - 53
Defense - 54
Katana - 52
There are skills listed below this that I can't read on my screen because they are cut off by the UI window.
Sabers -3
Hackers - 1
Heavy - 1
Weapon skills not increasing

It takes long time to train with strong dude like that. I had the very same idea.
I trained one man until he had katana - 50 and when I reached that, I changed his weapon to sabre and got new dude and started train him with katana.
After long long time playing, my first dude has sabre - 10 and second dude has katana - 34.
I think this has to be balanced somehow. I think that it's not hard for person, who has committed his life to be master swordsman with katana, to change into little different kind of weapon/sword. Either by training with one weapon type increasing other weapon types too but by slower pace (I don't recommend this). Or by giving exp bonus for training other weapon types and the amount of exp boost would be bigger if you have bigger stats on any other weapons (I think this is better).
Sorry my English but I hope you got my point

I would like to be able to gain experience with a new weapon without gaining any base stats. I'm mostly curious if this is by design or a planned feature. I know Chris said a long time ago that he wanted skills to raise very slowly and I like that idea, but you should still be able to learn a new weapon skill at a reasonable rate or maybe half the normal rate.
