This may be a long shot, but upon close inspection, I think the gates are telling you to point in the wrong direction.

Logically, the tracks and rollers would be inside the city and not the outside. I am not sure the reasoning, but either way, after reading around and getting a few ideas, the fix is simple.

Face the gate with the arrow facing into your town and you will have no problems.

Not sure if anyone else was having the problem of bandits hacking through the gates in 2 seconds, but turn it around arrow facing in and the problem goes away.

Now if we can get an alert when bandits are banging on it, that would be legit.

It made sense, because the AI was feeling like they were locked out of their own city. Works fine against bandits and anyone else. Repairs work, they don't sneak through.

Great, good to see that it works for someone else! I also thought it made more sense for the "track" portion of the gate to be inside the city. I've been a bit busy and haven't played much since I built my backwards gate, but I haven't had any issues with it since then. I'm planning to get a few hours of gaming in this weekend, so I'll get a chance to test it out a little further.
