v0.64.0- Bug/Unintended Feature-- Matryoshka Backpacks

Backpacks can be placed inside backpacks while retaining their contents. While the main backpack is equipped, all non-backpack items have their encumbrance cut in half, as usual, no matter the degree of nesting. All backpacks placed in other backpacks have zero weight (their contents, or the contents of other backpacks inside them still count for half their usual weight though), provided the main backpack (the nestee) is equipped.
Tested up to three nested backpacks. Saving and reloading does not appear to cause any problems. I have not tested this over an extended period of time though.
This can be exploited to carry a large number of items, or to put large backpacks with massive combat penalties in the smallest ones to circumvent the penalty. Normally one can unequip a backpack to do the same, but at the cost of increased encumbrance (as items in unequipped backpacks count for their normal weight instead of half) or an infuriating pixel-hunting game later if you decide to toss the backpack to the ground instead.
"Yo dawg, I herd you liek backpacks, so I put a backpack in your backpack, so you can pack while you pack!"

this has been reported before. but it almost always causes crashes or loss of items in the stored backpack in the main backpack.
the stacking amount is infinite.
We don't recommend trying to find out. unless you wish to crash your game.
We also recommend using search for the oddities or exploits you find, for many have been found already.

Please note: attempting to stack backpacks on top of each other within a trader's backpack will result in the contents of the stacked backpacks being lost. From what I've experimented with (from when we had colored coats, not with backpacks) the last item added to the stack will have its properties preserved as the BOTTOM item in the stack, so pulling them off one at a time, the last one might still have items. All the other items on the stack will be set to the default properties for the item.
That experiment is detailed in the
Dyes & Painting thread.

I can't seem to be able to stack backpacks in trader backpacks. In fact I can't stack anything that isn't a trade good either. Maybe something was changed between versions?

I've noticed this as well.
Might have been a temporary fix for the issue Tolwrath mentioned causing stacks of items to lose either their content or parameters.

Backpacks can be placed inside themselves, causing them and any other contents to be removed from the game. This occurs if you replace an open backpack with any other backpack, which DOES NOT close the previous backpack's UI, therefore allowing you to put the original backpack, now stuck to your cursor, within itself. Hilarity and/or frustration, depending on the value of the contents, ensues. Discovered because I thought it'd be funny to see what happened when I realised the bag stayed open

Not quite what I meant. The backpack can be placed inside itself, creating a paradox that causes it and it's contents to cease to be. Not quite the same thing as nesting.

I guess those Matryoshka backpacks also double as Klein backpacks. Heh.

Besides, maybe its not the bug, but feature?

31 minor versions later, this is still a thing. Done properly no items get deleted. It does get silly, though and very much feels like an exploit. I can understand 1 layer of nesting as a feature, more compact packing and all, but unlimited nesting? srsly?
A definitive statement from the devs on wether this is a bug or a feature would be nice.
