Hired adventurers don't seem to actually help you in fights. The reason is probably that they get a "follow" order on you, rather than a "bodyguard" order. You can also talk to them again and hire them again before their contract has expired which can mean wasted money from what ive seen.

I never actually wound up in combat while an adventurer was hired, but I did notice that

(1) after the duration expires, they don't lose the follow package.

In addition,

(2) if you have sufficient money for any of their hiring choices, and you talk to one about hiring, you can't change your mind. There's no way to exit out of the dialog so you have to hire them.
