I've been playing this game on 0.76.5 pretty regularly of late. I've noticed a few issues.

Path finding
Most issues are relating to path finding. For example, I have a fabric crate under the stairs in a large house. Right next to it is a fabric loom. The guy working the loom forgets how to get to the crate, which is just a few feet away. I know he can get to it because 90% of the time it's not an issue. CTRL+Shift+F11 sometimes fixes, sometimes not.

Automatic processors & mines
The guys working these things seem to completely lose it once in a while and just... stand there. Sometimes it's because they filled their inventory with raw materials and then have no room to take away the produced goods. In the case of the mines, they seem to just forget that they're supposed to be doing anything. I have found, though, that for the mines I can just set a person or two to haul ore/stone and it'll be fine. Same thing with the processors. If i set a person to haul the bars and/or building materials the confusion clears itself.

I would suggest having crafters (they do it, too) and refiners only take at most one full load in the machines for any given trip to the storage. i.e. 20 raw stone, 5 water barrels, 5 fabric, etc. There's no sense in them filling their entire inventory (trader backpack included) and then not being able to retrieve the item they made and put it wherever it belongs.

Farming
I have noticed that the people working my small farms eventually just stop loading water into the farms. If I manually have them do it the farms continue to work, but as soon as the water runs out they stop again. This does not happen to the hemp farms, only the small farms. It does not matter whether their inventories are empty, full, with or without backpacks, saved, loaded, etc.

I can destroy and rebuild the farm, then re-assign the person to work it. They will get one full load of water, process it, then stop again.

Police fighting citizens
I only ran into this once and reloading the game made them all stop. I wandered into Brink to sell some rum and buy some more backpacks when suddenly the police started just wailing on one of the adventure guild guys. Soon he was knocked out. I didn't see the cause, but a few minutes later one of the samurai tried walking into a building that was locked. It (of course) didn't open, so he started hitting the door. The police immediately swarmed him, causing one heck of a fight between the all of the samurai in the vicinity and the police (the samurai won, but not without losses of their own). This even put sizable bounties on the heads of the samurai, so as soon as the police woke up they were at it again. Had I not reloaded I'm sure the samurai would have eventually just killed all of the police. Not sure what that would've done to the game.

Memory use
I have noticed that as time goes on memory use goes up. I have the game paused in the background as I'm typing this and I'm sitting at 3.2 GB of memory taken up. The game usually starts off at 600 MB, grows to 1.8-2 GB the first time it loads, and then steadily grows from there.

Those are pretty much known
as for memory usage the game does indeed use a lot. but it has a lot going on and is not optimized fully yet.
This is only really and issue if your playing on the 32bit version. it will most likely have ongoing memory issues due to it being limited by a total of 4gb of total memory usage by the OS. which most modern games are now surpassing.

try your luck on the experimental branch and the 64bit version if your OS is setup for that.
if not. i suggest you upgrade to 64bit. as your issues will start becoming problems with other games as they switch to 64bit.
Do you believe the sexes should be equal?
Oh heavens no.
Then Men would become unmanageable

Ok so I haven't gotten this far in the game and I'm on experimental so I can't test this, but have you tried setting a worker first to automatically haul materials, and mine second? The game would prioritize the materials, but still mine when there weren't any. Maybe that's what you were doing and I misunderstood.
