Topper Katana is too long for INV

Version:
0.21.6
Description:
Topper Katana is one block too long to fit in inventory proper
Steps to Reproduce:
Buy Topper Katana, open inventory
Expected results:
self explanatory
Actual results:
..
Consistency
barring the advent of telescoping swords
this should be pretty damn consistent
Reported On:
30 January 2012 23:19 GMT
System specs/OS:
not really relevant here
Severity:
Minor annoyance, unless you simply must have a topper.
Workaround:
make sure there is space in character's upper weapon slot, which is long enough, if
character has a sabre equipped in slot, slot will not have space, and character
will not pick Topper up.

The question is; is it intentional or an oversight? As a design choice it strikes me as counter productive, forcing a lot of buggering about with the inventory.
*edit*
Cripes, I just realised there are spades of weapons too large to fit the inventory, I feel like a bit of a berk now, as such a thing must be intentional, though I still don't quite follow the logic behind it.

maybe with enough suggesting, the inventory pack space can be made 1 column wider...

It would fit vertically if we could rotate items 90 degrees.

Either solution would work, though Item rotation would be useful in general, I can't even count how many times I've played "inventory Tetris" in games and wished I could just rotate that axe 90 degrees.

Its intentionally to stop you hording weapons and make you think carefully about what you carry around. How many swords can you fit in your pocket? Although it doesnt apply at this stage, when the game grows I want to discourage looting as a main source of income.

If there's space for the item, it should be able to fit. If we have say, a few 3x3 items and a 3x4 item we're carrying to sell to the next town, we should be able to cram some medkits or bandages in the space on the side making that item 1x2 instead of 2x1.

There should be a limit to how much you carry in kg too. Like in oblivion for example. If you carry too much you can't move on, seems logical. I'd say have a big inventory and limit the weight you can carry.

This sounds like a good idea, people may loot in order to upgrade their own equipment or the poor may pick through the wreckage of a battlefield for some change, but actual payment sounds like better motivation for attacking others. This raises the question for bandits though, should they only attack traders or people with valuable cargo? players would need to be able to also be a bandit if he wanted to, so it needs to be a viable option...

A combination of this approach and the relatively limited inventory space should be enough to discourage folk from being packrats without resorting to weapons that congest your inventory in such inconvenient ways.
As whilst the current approach no doubt works to prevent hoarding, it also makes inventory management needlessly complicated, unless one of the design goals of the game is to simulate trying to fit all your holiday luggage into your carry-on bag?

but then we just go buy a traders backpack with high stacking.

why does it make things over complicated? 2 big weapons per-character is more than enough, unless its for looting, in which case you can get a large backpack or leave the junk behind.

ive never seen an rpg style game that was very realistic on looting and carrying. If you make it to small then you would never be able to loot and sell. so then how would you carry items and get money? if you make it too unrealistic then you have the problem where people just horde weapons and equipment and you have a guy carrying 100 Uber Twohanded Sword of the Giant.
Limiting it by weight is a good idea, but as you play longer yo should be able to get stonger/carry more.
Asheron's Call had weight limit and it seemed to work fine.
Diablo had the same size pack and then it was such a burden to farm loot to sell and make money. (of course money was useless after like level 10)
Torchlight had an animal that you could send back to town.
maybe instead of animals, you could have slaves pull a cart? haha this would look funny. One cart per game or something. i dont know im just throwing ideas out hoping to continue the discussion.

yes but diablo is all about loot, its just a looting game. Kenshi is a game that happens to let you loot while you do other fun stuff that isn't implemented yet.
