I've tried reinstalling and updating my drivers.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
Playing on a laptop.
Playing on a laptop.
I'm having the same problem.
Not surprised cause i'm using a bad card, "intel HD Graphics Family" but i seem to be able to run all sorts of other games no problem. so its a little confusing why i wouldn't have the texture for sand, or it doesn't work or wont render.. I dont know.
Either way, i hope you know how we can fix this.
Thanks!
PS: i'm also using a laptop, if that means anything.

Probably doesnt matter, but Right click on your desura desktop Icon > Open file location > Common > Kenshi > right click core > properties > Compatability > Run this program as administrator. Try then, and if not successful repeate to compatibity, and run as In 256 colour.
made sure it works, It's gotten rid of the grainy texture in some of the landscape for me..

I'm also having the same Issue, and again, running a laptop with an "HD graphics family" card.
I Do find the problem a little odd because I'm able to run Mount and Blade Warband just fine, even with a more graphically demanding mod and it won't even give me Issues as long as I keep the battle NPC count at a reasonable number.
I'll try the above mentioned possible solutions, see if anything works.
Edit: Half hour of messing with settings, no luck, running in compatibility mostly just caused kenshi to get mad at me and crash, game seems to run fine, tiny bit laggy but that is to be expected, its just the ground texture, still black, tho the very first time i started the game the ground texture was transparent, just since i updated it it became black. Not sure if that helps anything to point out.... anyway, I would love it if you could find a solution to this for the next update maybe. For now I'm just going to pretend I have some form of odd visual disability that makes sand look pitch black xD......... ( It makes the game really difficult to play because you can hardly see anything, especially bandits wearing black outfits!)

Whats your exact video cards? I think I might buy a cheap PC with one of these crappy HD cards and see if I can get the same results then. If you turn on "fancy shaders" in the options (and restart game) does it make buildings invisible? Thats another bug i need to fix for certain cards, so if i can find a card that gets both bugs it would be ideal.

I have 2 graphic cards
"NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M"
And the infamous "HD graphics family"
And i've tried turning on "fancy shaders", and the buildings are still perfectly visible.
But my ground remains black..

I get the exact same results as he does, I'm also running an HD family graphics card, on a laptop.
Same thing, grounds just black, but it dose not bother me all to much. I was not really planning on playing this game a ton when I first got it, more wanted to get it to support the effort itself and hope that one day I would boot it up and see its amazing finished shine.

bushido, you have 2 cards. Have you run the game with both? Does both the HD and the nvidia card get black terrain?

I've tried with both cards individually, it's the same thing; terrain is all black.

That is either very suspicious, or you are very unlucky.
Is it definitely using the card you say? Do you notice a much better frame rate when using the geforce? Could be your system overrides the choice maybe

Okay, i've tried both the cards once again.
NVIDIA CARD: Game crashes before the game even opens.
Family HD card: Black Terrain, but seems like it runs quite smooth.

Good to know it is not only me:

Seems to be a problem with Nvidia Optimus?

if it crashes at the character creation then try setting No Terrain Cutting in the options.
I have been playing around with Nvidia settings and Kenshi a bit now, and I can't get it to recognise the Nvidia GPU at all, no matter what I try.
I have no idea about programming, but can this be of help?

I have the same problem, i have a geforce 540 too. And it wont let me change the rendering device monitor, the only option is intel hd graphics family. I dont know if this is because i havent bought the game yet but if the terrain wasnt black i would buy it immediately.
