I know there are a lot of ideas for ranged weapons floating around and I wanted to make a fun place to discuss them. Chris mentioned that he wants to add bows, crossbows, and harpoon turrets. Please refrain from talking about firearms (there is a whole topic to that here http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB3/viewtop ... =10&t=1551 ), but anything not using gunpowder is welcome. Post pictures and explain why you would like to play with them.

So, somthing that I became interested from the firearm topic was air guns. They operated on compressed air and originated in the 1700s (at least as far as I know).
Image
The enlarged buttstock is actually an air tank. It used an elaborate system contained in this back pack to pump the gun up again.
Image
Here is a later version from around world war II.Image

Ok, here are a couple I drew that I think could fit into Kenshi's asthetic.
Image
The one on the left features a bicycle style pump that doubles as a shoulder stock, and an old-timey crossbow style trigger. It would have to be placed barrel down to pump up. The one on the right, has a more conventional trigger and a well pump style pumping device. This device is patented by me, and I dub it 'Sir hand eater'. Both are breech loaded and could use darts, or balls or just about anything.

I can just imagine an imperial conscript frantically trying to use that bicycle pump.

You're really keen to get guns into the game :P

I'll hand it to you though, this is a more plausible way of doing it. The only thing I'd still argue against would be how you'd implement guns into the game mechanics. If harpoon guns are going to be like crossbows, then I can't see how having a seperate gun mechanic would benefit the game as an addition.

I will say though that as this is an air gun which relies on a crossbow style trigger, could it not be implemented as another type of harpoon gun weapon (such as the Flat Topper and Cleaver are two weapon variants in the "Hacker" class) ?

EDIT: Also should this be merged into the Firearms thread?

Actually, I think that Scotterius has said that he don't want guns/firearms, because if firearms aren't implemented, they leave more space for more interesting options.(Such as air guns etc.) And air guns have already being said in firearms topic.

Firearms are weapons that use gunpowder etc. to shoot. This is for other ranged weapons than those using explosives to send projectile to air.

I'd like to see children using little slingshots if children are ever implemented. Big slingshots like catapults and scorpions can be for adults only.

And if they can be counted as ranged weapons, I want to pour hot oil from my outposts walls and there are these planks (don't know what they are called and couldn't find picture) that have simple mechanics. They are attached to wall and people put rocks/stones on it and then bend the plank, so the rock drops on enemies. It could be simple way for civilians/women/children to help defending against intruders because it doesn't need any experience or training.

Hope you understand what I'm saying

Sure, you want to murder children guilty of using sling shots. I think that is pretty universal. Man, remember those pick pocketing children in Fallout 2?

Well, harpoon guns were spoken of as turrets - if they were pneumatic the air gun has a precedence. The air gun would essentially be overlapping with the crossbow (in practice they share the same advantages and disadvantages). I think Bicycle pump gun, is more neat. It uses the crossbow trigger because the pump actually places the trigger so far away from the body. But yeah, its kind of the same thing as a cross bow.

In the world Kenshi takes place in I'd see harpoons being powered by a huge spring, and being wound up. That just makes more sense to me

This was mentioned by Chris, so I guess this and the fact that there are two seperate skills for harpoon guns and turrets, I think there will be a seperate portable harpoon gun and a stationary turret version also.

But I believe that an air gun and a crossbow could both be categorized as "harpoon guns" collectively. Maybe Air guns would be an inaccurate, shorter ranged version of the crossbow, but with alot more power?

Sure, or they could be like a super blow dart that can fire specialized ammo. I am thinking things like tranquilizers ...or poison...or Yersinia pestis:twisted:

So a harpoon gun would just be a fancy javelin launcher, like a pneumatic atlatl?

Image

I can see why. Atlatls dont look asian...at all. Something new has a nuetrality about it that could perform the same function and still fit with the asthetic.

Not quite sure whether you think I disagree or not, so I'll just say that I actually like your idea. An Pneumatic atlatl would look ridiculous. But this is not what I envisioned when I pictured a harpoon gun. Something like your design is what I imagined - customer made from whatever can be cobbled together and fired using a method that doesn't rely on gunpowder or ignition.

What I was disagreeing with was having a whole new class dedicated to "Air guns" when the harpoon gun is basically the "hand-held ranged weapon that's not a bow" weapon category - why not make the air gun a variant of the harpoon gun class?

I know this is the worst diagram ever, but i just drew it to show the point, lol (pun)
I've imagined the harpoon guns to look like this, as stationary weapons, and it seems no one has mentiined sping-mechanics yet, so i thought i'd throw my bit in
Isn't that kenshi guy happy?

It'd have the large spring on the end, and a wind-up lever on one side, or both, to pull the harpoon in and then a trigger to fire.

Um, no. A Javelin launcher should not be closer range and do more damage than a crossbow. Stop trying to figure out how you can kill my characters with one shot, thanks. Anyways, I think a javelin launcher should be long range but do a decent amount of damage (like 75 max) and have good accuracy, but incredibly long reload. Like a one time deal in a battle because of the 5 minute reload and not all battles will take that long. How about instead of dicking around with the accuracy which does essentially nothing except make a 1 hit kill based on luck instead of your character skills (making the whole leveling up your skills stupid and worthless) you give it longer reloads. Try considering DPS to balance things, because that actually makes sense. If a crossbow does a lot of damage, give it a long reload. That's better than "HURRR 1% AKKURASSIE," because when it does work on its 100th shot, you're still gonna 1 hit kill someone and that isn't fair. You have to take in realism because this game isn't for an idiotic fan base with dysfunctional brains. If you do suggest airguns, I'm not particularly against this, if you have a large cooldown based on repumping up the gun, which would mean you either sit there waiting for the cooldown, getting gang beat, or pull out your sword and switch up your tactics. They should also have decent accuracy, always. It just makes sense.

That is awesome, and exactly why I made this topic. Spring harpoon guns are kind of a neat idea. I was planning on drawing some pneumatic ones but took your lead instead.

Image

I moved the spring internally, and it uses an overhead lever. When the over head lever is pressed down it cocks, becoming parallel with the gun. At this time it locks and can be used to aim. The trigger is a motorcycle clutch control (at least in appearance) on the lever.

I can see how pneumatic and spring operated harpoon gun turrets could be used, with pneumatic versions just being more advanced.

Edit: i.e.:
Image

Ok, so that is fugly and completely outrageous, but you can see what is going on. The simpler operation of pneumatic designs allow more applications. This one would have all of its tubes loaded, and each could be fired individually, or at once for a harpoon shower. It would be great to use against masses gathered to chop down your gate though.

Okay well here's the harpoon gun http://i.imgur.com/icQMZ.jpg

It has a door on the side to show the spring chamber.

In this pic the chamber is closed and the crank-up level is depressed fully.

I got lazy with the harpoon itself lol

Due to the reveal of electricity in Kenshi, SCOTTO industries is proud to anounce the SCOTTOTRON, the latest in electric spewing death.

Image

This amazing weapon system features:
A multi-axis turret for the SCOTTOTRON lightning emitter.
6 high capacity...capacitors.
An absolutely huge Generator.
A certified "Wheel of Pain" (avaliable in varying sizes).
A rate of fire (dependent on whip rate) of 3- 4 times a day!

But perhaps you have reservations. Perhaps you say "But SCOTTO Industries, what is keeping the lighting discharge from simply grounding through the tower infrastructure electrocuting everyone inside the town?" Well, fear not. We have figured the *CENSORED* out of this.

Image

Due to recent breakthroughs in nature based intelligence, we have found the perfect guidance package for your lightning fueled wrath. We have convinced canines that any weapon wielding masses outside your city walls have pockets filled with cookies. Now these confection seeking hounds will carry your special grounding coil right to your enemies. With a flip of a switch the circuit is complete and flesh searing plasma arcs between the coils, resulting in absolute devastation.

Here at SCOTTO industries we love the smell of ozone and dog fur in the morning. It smells like Despotism.

Can't stop laughing.

Although I do have one criticism. Don't hurt the poor doggies. We will have slavery in this game. maybe we can use the slaves and tell them they can go free...then BOOM!

Either way, absolutely incredible! I love the effort that has gone into this. I really need to check out this subforum more often.

I really like the airguns, they could kinda fit in. Bow for close range, crossbows for medium and airguns for my snipers :D.

Has anyone here or in another forum ever mentioned thrown weapons?
Like shurikens, kunai, dirk, axes?
It would be very close combat but at least it would make a stealth damage, kill and be very ninja if you had a katana, shurikens and be very sneaky with black clothes running aorund in the desert at night!!!
xD
