I'm sure this has been posted elsewhere, but are strides taken to try and keep saves compatible with new versions or are the updates typically so drastic that it's not possible?

most times unless there is a error or your version is really old, you can import into a new game with your current people as the game progresses thru versions.

Now this is not 100% guaranteed that it will always work but its a good bet that most times. it will.

Importing with Characters only usually no issues
Import with tech and characters, again usually no issues.
Importing with characters and tech and Buildings. this is when we run into issues. the importing with buildings can be buggy depending on the update.

I will say that when you build a outpost, don't get too attached to it for while the game is in development, there is more or less a 100% chance that you will have to rebuild your base a few times because it would not import correctly. I have rebuilt my base at least 5 times so far due to buildings not importing correctly.

Thank you for the information. So, your export and import characters through the updates, not individual save files?

importing into a new game is the only option at this time.
you can export your bod file but there is no real way to use that just yet.

So I just save them at a plastic surgeon and then import them later? I assume the stats stay the same? Sorry for being so clueless.

I'm just a clueless idiot trying to figure out exactly how I save my games in preparation for new versions that might corrupt my previous ones.

The body file just contains the body slider numbers of the character that was saved, it doesn't save stats.

I used to save a text document containing the equipment and stats of my squad so I didn't have to worry about losing them, then used the F.C.S. and my text document to create a custom start off where I started off with my old characters from that recorded squad.

I stopped getting attached to my squads after the 3rd or 4th one, and I recommend you start doing the same, but it's still a way to save your squad for the overly committed person that has sunk in hours of their time training up a squad.

All right, thanks a bunch. I'm a bit of an overly committed person so I will likely do so until I reach the "I don't care" point. Is there any way to see all that body slider and stat data from the files, or should I pre-emptively write it all down from the in-game menus?

You don't need to export your squad. Simply use the import button, and then select the save that you want to import data from. That will pull data from your existing save (your characters, buildings, and/or research) and start a new game with it. Then you can just save in a new save file or whatever.

If you think the next version will block you from importing somehow, then you can take screenshots of your characters' data at a plastic surgeon so you can recreate their appearance later. Or you could create a custom start that starts you off with your existing characters (see modding sub-forum). This method would also save your characters' stats.

Actually it was misleading information on Hatsunes side why it took so long to answer.
You asked whether you have to export your squad and she answered with "yes". :D

Hehe, don't worry, Neko, I've got your back if I think you missed something when answering. Gal is, if you have anymore questions, don't be afraid to ask, but you also might be able to find an answer more quickly by using the search function, so always try that too.
