Food/Sleep buffs!
I want omnoms in this game! However, I don't want to have to manage Hunger. But why reinvent the wheel? It's already a thing where food gives buffs and sleep rewards with faster xp(in this case skill growth). In Kenshi, Food could add +2 to str and maybe replenish 10 blood. Stuff like that. Maybe food could also help you gain strength, toughness stats, while sleeping improves skill growth! That makes the most logical sense to me
um except eating an sleeping generally don't do much for you in the real world except keep you alive .
Eating a snickers bar isn't going to imrpove any attribute i have o.o
And in my experience sleeping doesn't allow me to do anything faster . So i would argue in my experiences with 'food' and 'sleep' that while that may be a normal thing in other games.
Kenshi is trying to be a bit more 'realistic' i believe. so While i don't inherently mind food an water being a thing. (preferable with characters consuming whats in their inventory when they need to on their own to avoid tedium).
i don't think it should go to far in giving people 'benefits' because while drinking water could make you feel refreshed an a slightly bit more energized if you were on the break of dehydration or something.
it really doesn't 'boost' anything. except the likelihood of needing to pee.

In real life
Bruh. Eating gives me so many buffs in real life. I always have to choose how to hydrate and eat based on the type of workout I'm doing that day. if I'm not working out, I don't even eat. I just drink carnation instant breakfast with my coffee. So, loosely speaking, I don't really need go eat to live.
Also, when I was fucking around with narcolepsy medication, I didn't sleep. At all. For 5 full days at a time. It was awesome, but I had a reduced ability to learn and retain information. Which in a way defeated my initial purpose because I was in grad school. Sleeping improves your ability to learn.
In game
I don't want food to be necessary, no dehydration or anything. Maybe not even buffs. How about just
improved ability to gain strength, athletics from food.
Improved ability to learn skills from sleep.
Be another reason to let them get some rest other than because a ninja stabbings.
Operating from a baseline of NO sleep and NO food. If they(Kenshi characters) were to sleep or eat, there ought to be an improvement in their performance. That just makes sense.

If your going to lie in a post at least make it believable.
:p
there are plenty of people who 'eat' healthy , and 'sleep' healthy. and gain no benefit from it.
There are plenty of people who barely eat anything and barely sleep any who have no ill, or positive effects.
an then there are people on the opposite end of the spectrum who have opposite effects from those relative extremes.
the human body isn't capable of being up 24/7 for 5 days straight. even if you didn't realize it , odds are you slept at some point within those 5 days. other wise i'm talking to the ghost in the machine :p
and your "instant" breakfast foods are designed to have all the base nutrients that you'd get from your average breakfast. So you did consume , the nutrients needed for survival.
Exaggerate the truth is silly. and not one of your statements results in a 'buff' Go left your max weight... Eat a snickers bar an see if it doubles how much weight you can carry . if not i maintain my original post.

There's no point in lying on the internet. I had no intent to boast, I was using anecdotal evidence.
From a baseline where I take the minimum required nutrients to live, i.e. my meal replacements, any additional food I intake improves my ability to gain muscle mass as well as increases my ability to lift solid objects.
I already have the required muscle in order to lift (x) lbs. Without the food necessary to power that muscle, I can only lift (x-50) lbs depending on the exercise.
This is what I mean by food improving my capability to perform work.
I will grant you that in my original statement, "Loosely speaking, I don't need food to live." I was referring to a rather narrow definition of food as actual solid sit down meals. A very Clinton-esque "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." I'll retract that.
You don't seem to understand the efficacy of prescription medications. Naturally, I couldn't go five days straight without sleep. But on Nuvigil? Fuck yes I can.
None of my statements were mendacious.
Your statement that some people who eat and sleep healthy gain no benefit does not make sense to me. Please explain that further to me.
It seems that you are referring to how the different baseline requirements for sleep and food vary from person to person. This is obvious.
Suppose I need (x) amount of food and (x) amount of sleep to run around and do things. That may be the minimum amount, but if I wanted to run harder or do more, I would need more (x+value) food/sleep to do more. Therefore all of that additional value is essentially providing me a buff in capability. This should be easy to comprehend.
I imagine that in the world of Kenshi. The baseline need for food and nutrition is 0. Therefore increasing the amount of food you take in should increase your ability.
I think a lot of our discussions stem from you (Chinsei) being very literal. I am not very literal, lol.

Just want survival options (food/sleep/energy) part of the choices to activate in Advanced Options.
Gives food purpose, though may need to be processed to rations similar to what was seen in what barkeepers sell. I'd propose different tiers of food rations and its own food preparation desk, with higher levels adding in more diverse meals. Bread and Water can be processed to the lowest level rations, giving the necessary sustenance. Thirst and hunger won't be needed to be separate in this way. Rum can even be used as part of the higher-level rations, giving a natural recovery bonus due to alcohol's properties.
I can go deeper by speculating roles in nutrition needs, further affected by health status, endurance, toughness, and strength. High strength have higher nutritional needs to maintain, while high endurance slows nutrition drain at positive values, and high toughness slows nutrition drain at negative values (resisting from succumbing to starvation/thirst). Injuries speed up nutrition drain as part of the recovery process, especially at unconscious and dying states. Even blood loss would need nutrition to recover the lost volume.
