I suggested this before like about a year ago and I thought I could bring this up again, but with more detail and for the current gen of Kenshi testers.
Banner icons are intricate GUI devices that hover above squad huddled close to each other enough, or on each far apart separated members. This allows us to easily identify our units or other units easily. But for NPC banner icons to be visible, a unit with some sort of...'scouting skill,' must be close to that squad so that they're visible on the GUI.
For interaction...well, straight forward. You can left click it to select the entire squad, shift click to add that entire squad to your collection. And even give commands what you normally do in right-clicking. Follow, Bodyguard, Attack, etc.

I like this idea. Also, clicking on the party title, or Nameless, or whatever you named it to should select your entire party.
In addition, it would be cool to be able to set formations based on skills.
Warriors up front, rogues strafe around to attack backs, archers at a distance, and medical/support doing what they do best - CC/Heal.
