I have to admit, I mostly want to see this used against me. I still imagine I would like to build them, as well, though.

I suggest two new building types. Each would be contained within the terrain -- so green if it doesn't poke through the terrain, red if anything sticks above ground. The names are not meant as suggestions for in-game, but more as descriptors.

-- "Foxhole": a small underground space with a ladder to climb out. It would be square as wide as a Small Shack. If the ladder isn't possible (I think I've noticed ladders on structures around the Hive Villages) then a dirt ramp could go along one wall.

-- "Bunker": a large excavation, two floors. Top floor is a tunnel linking four small rooms arranged two on each side. End of the tunnel goes down a ladder into a large open chamber underneath spanning the whole space above.

I think clearing these would be fun and challenging. There would always be a level of suspense going through the rooms in the bunkers, and the foxholes add a surprise, ambush element, or a good place to hide and conduct hit and run assaults.

Plus what better spot to start mushroom farming! ;)

I like this idea ^_^ It'd be neat if we could figure out how to do this. They'll have to fix terrain first, but it'd be excellent for wanderers or bad guys who need a chill-pad to lay low and not be found. Literally just have a lantern and a sleeping mat, maybe a horde of treasure beneath it all.

Who knows! But I like it.

I actually don't think it would require much fixing of the terrain. Buildings are already set to override terrain, so at most it might be a matter of addressing how buildings are placed on the terrain.

Nice idea! I imgine though, that to roam those structures comfortably, it'd require partial or complete shading of world above, and also would be nice to equip these with some distinctive entrance at the ground level, because terrain is a ... and we need something at the ground, to give chars a sure step. Perhaps a small concrete panel with a hatch for little shack, and some half of our current shack for the bunker.

I like the idea of a hatch. Barring that I would be fine with just an opening in the ground with steps or a ladder leading out.

I'm not in any way against it, i'm just afraid that current mechanic would require some kind of objective surface structure for precise building and ensuring that char is stepping from the terrain to the artificial object, not into the digital void below the map :) In other words, just as we now have a lowest point we can plan structure at, same thing should be applied to bunkers, to ensure they're build at the right level, not above, nor below terrain :) Hope my explanation wasn't very messy

I think that makes sense. It could even be some of the excavated earth for the foxhole, maybe, and something more substantial and defensible for the larger barracks.
