This is actually a good idea.

My thought though I posted something close to this one before about bows. If they are brought into the game they should be dumbed down to before they were armor piercing it was not until the long bow and other advancments that made them usefull against armor.
As for slings it would be a good idea they would be good for fleshy attacks. They were also used as a last resort close courter battle. Like a club of sorts.
The javelin as you all are saying can come in many types. All depends on your perspective of the weapon. Though some times there were tools that were used with the shorter forms of the weapon to get more strength and range out of the weapon by the flick of your wrist. Though in some cases it was more or less just an arrow that was throughen. I think a spear with a short through range would be nice does not have to have armoure peircing abilities. But the romans did come up with some nasty ideas when it came to this weapon made it a good deffencive weapon as well as a ranged weapon and they also carried a sword for back up.
Personaly I do not care if they bring one or all 3 into the game. Though I hope they dumb them down to were they are not a one hit kill through armor kind of weapon. Because then we will be running into bandits taken out are squad in full armor from range. An the game tactics of close and personal big hand to hand battles will start to become less of an object and more of a last resort. Though I do think a nice hunting bow would be nice for when animals are brought into the game. But like I said make it good for flesh not armor.

So let's say that there will be as many ranged weapons as there are melee.
Melee weapons I am aware of:
Cannibal Cleaver (removed)
Club
Katana (and its lighter variant, amongst many, many others)
No-Dachi
Heavy Club
Long Cleaver
Fragment Axe
Plank
Straight katana
Horse Chopper
Ringed Sabre
Topper
Wakizashi
So that means there should be 13 ranged weapons (not including variants) to have the same amount of variety. So this leads me to...
PnzrNorm's list of requested ranged weapons:
Slings (and the slingshot)
Javelins (and similar thrown weapons like the atl-atl and pilum)
Bows (longbows, shortbows, thinbows, fatbows, redbows, bluebows, oh, and pretty bows)
Crossbows (and smaller "hand crossbows")
Throwing Axes
Shuriken (and other throwing stars)
Throwing Knives/Daggers
Chakram
Nets
And I can't quite reach 13 ranged weapon classes. Even when including hand thrown objects.

And if not we'll make one... However I can see them taking almost crippling injuries and making them get a steady job in a village from arrowsPnzrNorm wrote:+1 to this, but I'm sure we'll see some nordic inspired factions once some sort of frigid tundra biome is announced.Seimears wrote:I would like to see axes on the melee side of things as well.

If I was gonna do this, I'd opt for realism. Have both shortbows and longbows, crossbows, slings, and javelins.
Shortbows
Pro's:
firing speed scales with skill, can get ridiculously fast at high skill
decent raw damage
cheaper arrows
small enough to be a secondary weapon
Cons:
Expensive to make
litte to no armour piercing to counter stupidly fast rate of fire (the fasted time I know of is three arrows per second)
Heavily dependent on stats, starts out garbage.
Longbows:
Pro's:
Longest range in game
Damage scales with strength
Decent armour piercing
Staggering
Cheap to make
Cons:
Slow, speed still scales with skill, but you cannot achieve the ridiculous speed of a shortbow
expensive arrows
heavier than shortbow
takes up primary weapon slot
Crossbows:
Pro's"
Good base stats all around, and is very easy to use
relatively cheap bolts
Great armour piercing
Cons:
Expensive to build
Takes primary weapon slot
Has no stat scaling at all besides accuracy
Much shorter range than the longbow or shortbow.
Sling:
Pro's:
Damage scales with skill, can get very high
secondary weapon, almost no weight cost
can switch to rocks when out of shot (infinite ammo, but if out of shot loses armour piercing qualities)
decent armour piercing when using shot
shot is very cheap and can be mass produced with only iron
Sling is dirt cheap, can be mass produced with only leather
Cons:
Damage scales with skill, prepare to practice
rocks aren't very effective against armour, if it hits armour it will do very very little
shorter range than the crossbow
Javelin:
Pro's:
Highest raw damage of all ranged weapons
doubles as a spear in melee combat (meaning you don't need a secondary weapon)
Easy to use
range and damage scale a little with strength
versatile
Cons:
Shortest range of all ranged weapons
heavy
ammunition is the most expensive and takes up the most slots and weight
Shortbows

Don't forget about the yumi.A Space Ostrich wrote:Longbows:

Where the katana is an extension of the arm, the yumi is an extension of the eye. Just a gaze and it will pierce the heart of man and beast, alike.
Would agree with all but this part. The earlier crossbow was not easy to use. It had its issues. It was only after time and tweaking the craft that it got better. Now to this game. We have mix era gear all through this game. We have power and electricity and then has a fill of times when things were older were we only had swords and arrows as weapons. So it all depends on the creaters vision when it comes to this weapon. If he brings in the new versions yes very easy to use but if he brings in an older version it will take skill to use it effectivly. But there is another factor to this. The ppl in the game. Have never used a gun so there for even been a newer version does not mean it will be easy for them to use.

Fair point. I'd disagree about them never firing a gun before, both because guns themselves might actually be added, and because the gun shape that a crossbow takes up is something that humans can instinctually use. It's like driving a car, everybody no matter who they are can understand and steer a car, it's instinctive.
Pretty sure harpoon turrets are coming in today's update.A Space Ostrich wrote:Fair point.
