Research While Crippled (leg)

So I'm playing Kenshi for the first time in years. I had a guy lose a leg and I thought, I'll buy a shack, build a research bench, and let him do that until I figure out where to buy limbs.

Turns out you need to stand up to be able to read books at a bench. Since it's technically a machine, and you don't use two machines at once, and a stool is also technically a machine, I guess. I dunno, it was the thought that I had, and it would have been cool if it worked like I expected, but I don't know if you could readily work in researching while crippled, other than let a guy lay on the floor in front of the research bench doing it, but that wouldn't look cool.

I ended up searching forums/wikis to figure out where to get him a limb right away, sure I'd like to play spoiler free, but having a guy that seemingly can't do anything isn't very interesting... is there anything a cripple CAN do, aside from carry stuff at crawl speed and lie on the ground poking at things during fights?

Get him a cross bow and carry him around, drop him when a fight starts and let him shoot from a distance.
But basically without a limb you are at a great disadvantage. So getting a new one is important. My medics always carry spare limbs now. even when you are starting out you can get some cheap hive versions to get you on you feet till you can afford the good stuff.
