You know I don't know why I never thought of this before, but in all the discussion about guard jobs, and gate guards, and gate tender jobs, all to close the gates when enemies attack, I don't recall ever hearing the idea to just have the gates automatically close all the time.

I mean it would be simple that whenever someone opens them they wait a few seconds and then close by themselves.
Depending on if they are private or public would tell you wither anyone or just your troops can open them.
And having them locked would override that the same as it does now.

This means that animals wouldn't wonder in and you don't have to worry about them being left open when you leave your base to look around some place.

This could just be a setting that is added to the current options of open/closed/auto.

I mean with a gate it's really just about how you balance the counterweights.

Did I just miss this before?

Brilliant idea, actually.

However, if we're talking about player-built gates, i thought operating them is as simple as selecting them and then clicking those litle buttons in the bottom left, just like with regular building doors, no actual characters involved. Am i wrong? Of course this still require some attention, and only work with player gates, but it should be way easier to just pause the game and do some magic then to send a character to do it.

Yeah that is what I do now, but that is only when I'm paying attention to them. I have to open them to clear the dead cannibals from the door step and then close them when more show up. If i'm not watching they slip past. It would be much easier if the gates closed themselves so that I didn't have to watch them. Especially when I'm out adventuring. I have people left back at base. And I ha
ve to keep checking in to see if they have opened the gates or not. Or I have to lock them in and they can't do anything outside the walls.

I mean it's like mom always yelled at us, "Last one in close the door!"

I've always wanted this. Make them repair it too.

I often solved this issue by having multiple walled layers. Tbh the game could really do well with having an "alarm" sound to notify you that there are enemy units close to your base. Maybe that could even be a building that you have to research first!
...and so my legacy continues...
