Since the game will be set 1000 years in the past, a few ideas come out that might be easy to implement and enjoyable for the players.

Depletable resource nodes

High Quality wood node (think of a very straight and densely packed area of trees)
Uses for the resource: - These would be good for making staffs, arrows, bolts, wood for wooden Sandals, certain backpacks, clothing additions, and fuel to be used in other processes (fuel).
How to NOT make it OP It might only have a few hundred or thousand wood before the node is considered depleted. It can be renewed over time.

Oil pool A very small pool that might be hard to see, but can indicate that there is oil underground to drill for.
Uses for the resource: - Oil isn't meant to add vehicles or anything op, it's meant to enhance other processes. So weapon oil, lubricants for machines to run better, build machines with and of course robots as well as advance robot repair kits. It could possibly allow rough refining into plastics and other feed materials.
These nodes give you pretty much nothing but a site to build a 'test derrick' to find out how big the node is below, it might be worth building a bigger rig it might not, that's up to the player. Any proto nations in the area will DEFINITELY want to take this thing from you OR heavily demand funds for it's use on 'their' lands.

Coal Node - Like present day copper and iron nodes, but they do deplete and can never be renewed.
Uses for the resource: - This enables easier construction of steel IF you have the man power and iron as well. Think of being able to make faster armor plates instead of plate beating stations. Also fuel that is long and slow burning, towns want it for a trade good and many towns, villages and cities should want it to make higher heat fires.

How to explain them NOT being in Kenshi 1?

Oil and Coal nodes were depleted centuries ago, heavy usage helped lead to the acid rains on parts of the map and anything players MIGHT be finding in Kenshi 1 are such trace amounts that farmers and cities have long ago moved over to more sustainable methods like hemp.

Wood nodes might still exist but with all the pollution from coal and oil usage, the trees in the land do NOT grow correctly (think of trees trying to grow in a super polluted area .... like New Jersey ;) ) and instead we get brittle, twisted trees that while good for small fires (explaining away the ease of making fires in Kenshi 1), they do NOT lend themselves to being used for other things like weapons, ammo and the like.

As always I'm using the below method when I make my suggestions. Sorry if this got wordy, I'm just hoping to add something small to Kenshi 2 that many can enjoy and the dev's don't want to murder me over suggesting. Thank you and see you in the next suggestion (in a few days)

Instead of something that will be a nightmare for the devs to code, I wanted to suggest something simple that hopefully achieves a few things.
1. Devs don't pull hair out reading it thinking of the 100,000 lines of code that could be required (aka they might want to build it)
2. Players think it's a fair and balanced (aka not OP as hell, not cheesy suggestion) and something they could see using
3. It's something that the game modders could take and use for other purposes (future expansion ideas)
