Recently bought into the alpha of Kerbal Space Program. I've been following it on and off for 2 years and it finally convinced me to buy.

Do we have any other space junkies out there who have played this/own it?

1: every time you fail, you will have fun
2: make sure you never have too much weight
3: after you have gained some experience (and it's more thank just 1 week experience so don't even think about it) you should browse for mods to see if any can make gameplay more easy for you
4: if you are having difficulty, then go see some videos. Go see like chapter 1 and 2 of a channel to learn some more things
5: ALLWAYS take a mun radiation detector if you plan to go to the moon

Thanks for the tips, I was more hoping people would share some of their stories/exploits rather than tips. I'm not such a bad player with several mun landings and minmus landings as well as the occasional successful rescue flight to go and pick up a stranded survivor (considerably harder than you would think).

Mostly it is the introduction of space stations that has me hooked. Have you managed to build anything substantial yet? So far I've only managed to get about 4 of the big solar panels, a habitation module and somewhere in the vicinity of about 4000L of fuel storage for mid flight refuelling on future long range missions. This was spread over about 3 or 4 separate launches to drop of each 'module'.

My next step will be a trip to another planet but the logistics behind such a massive trip scare me. Realistically, do you have any way to land on Eve and then take off again? The gravity is way too high for me to carry that much fuel. Maybe a rocket plane could work since there is an atmosphere? Or would you think that I should try and launch a load of fuel canisters and build a refuelling storage station in orbit and use that for the return flight?

EDIT: Spaceplane fail. I can't fly the things. Or my designs are just terrible. I am a rocket man only it seems.

I am liking the complexity here. So lets see what Toast can accomplish (Stay tuned).

What factors affect the minions in this game? (air,water,food,ect...?)

The demo is a free full version, but its way back in the alpha and doesn't support plugins. The current paid alpha level is about 5 major releases ahead of the demo.

Which do you plan on attempting toast?

I like the space-station idea, however I would like to learn more about the plane-style launches. (Mainly because rocketry usually ends with an explosion for me).

EDIT: There seems to be a LOT of factors for craft construction. Maybe a space station is too much for a novice. I think that I will switch my overall goal from "space station" to "not die".

A very good choice. Docking two craft in space is a damn difficult task. Even worse if it is not even around Kerbin (Earth). I tried building a station around the moon and even a small margin of error sets things way off.

I think space planes are impossible to control without some sort of joystick. Using the keyboard means you end up with a craft that sort of bobs around with no real soft control to it. I don't like the feel and I think it is too unrealistic. Or it could just be my designs; I've only just figured out how to display the centre of gravity of the vehicle.

EDIT: This might be helpful. This guy is pleasantly fun to watch for a youtuber and seems to know enough without being over the top. Plus he starts small, shows most of his working out, knows how to edit videos and builds up a decent program in a logical manner. Enjoy.

Hello!

First of all i LOVE kerbal Space program! That's why i am posting. in advance - my apologies for mistakes that I make by writing - English, my native language is not.
About this game - Kenshi, I saw it just on 31st on December 2012, bought it after 2 hours reading and looking what kind of game it is. I'm quite new to this all, I've been surfing the forum A LOT for any kind of info to help me in my game :) . I have a Youtube channel and I'm going to show this game to my subscribers! I hope they are going to LOVE it, like I did! :)
My channel is in Russian, so don't bother looking, well if you are Russian or know the language - be my guest :)

What made me post this? Well, I DO know that there is a post about how could our beloved King help us in our youtube channel and so on. About a half a year ago i started creating my channel, and thus far - I am pleased with my work :) And ALSO i am playing this game - Kerbal Space Program, so even if you don't know the language - can came and look at the designs of my ships. :) Maybe it will help you in some kind of a way! :)

Thank you for your time! :)

You should always proofread carefully to make sure you didn't any words out.

Feel free to edit one in if you know how.

Personally, i think the joke would be more fitting if it was a link to rick astley. instead it was a bit average.

Been playing a bit lately and doing some more exploring. Finally found some of the easter eggs hidden out there. Man the dudes have put lots of effort into this game. There is even a memorial/epitaph on the moon to neil armstrong and it is located on the exact co-ordinates where he landed for his moon trip. Awesomesauce.

While I am probably talking to myself, this has never stopped me before so I will continue to use this thread to sperge about kerbal space program.

Been doing some of my first interplanetary trips. They have had mixed success. I've been able to get out to the Mars equivalent and one of the asteroid equivalents (Duna and Dres, respectively) and land safely. Even managed to return from one of them (I forget which).

Going out further and going deeper towards the sun have been more difficult however. I got out to the Jupiter-esque planet (Jool) but ran out of fuel in a safe orbit after some successful aerobraking. I'm reaching the limits of my designs. Has anyone else got some good design tips they can use to help me? I need some major rethinks on how I build rockets to get much further.

Hey, recently got Kerbal space program. It is fantastic, really one of the best games I have played since portal. It is so challenging, and not a game to play for an very long time as it can be. Still, the launches should feel you with glee and you will catch up on the orbital terminology pretty quickly.

Quick to the periapsis! I need a prograde burn!

Good to hear you are getting into it. The trick with the moon is simplicity. It isn't as far away as you would think. A single small fuel tank is enough to land and return a 1-man pod safely. The trick is getting that pod and small fuel tank there. Should be possible in 3 stages: Launch, transfer and lander.

If in doubt watch some youtube. Scott Manley is by far the best since he gushes with factual information about real-life things and jefmajor is the one that really got me into it. His program starts small and builds logically so you can learn a lot and follow along. (also both are very competent gamers and presenters, rather rare in youtube-land). I can provide links if you can't find them via search.

I got to the moon this weekend! Using a monstrosity of a rocket with almost 700 parts! I had way to much fuel, but I feel pretty confident in exploring other planets with it...at least with the non lander version.

Here are some pics.

MOAR ROCKETS!!!!1!!

But success...is wonderful. Landing was accompanied by a happy dance all around the house...and more mountain dew, of course.

Oh dear god. That monstrosity even flies? Still, I think I can seem some space on the side there for some solid rocket boosters. :D

I'll go check out some of mine and see if they are screenshot worthy so we can compare.

EDIT: This is my Hunter Mk2 model. It is far too large for a simple moon trip (although fully capable) and the recent additions of solid rocket boosters on the side (technically making it a Mk3 version) have given it even more lift. It has been my most successful manned launcher for a variety of missions and has more recently been targeted towards Duna and Dres.

Image

It was based on the once used (but highly successful) Hunter Mk1 unmanned model which I used to rescue a kerman from the a stranded lander on the Mun.
Since then I've started Kethane fuel mining (via a mod) and needed to come up with some new designs which have led to new revelations in rocket design. I can post picks of those if you are still interested.

EDIT2: The Hunter M2 in orbit around Eve.
Image

While it would be trivial to land since eve has a very thick atmosphere (I used aero braking to slow down) and I have a parachute I am certain that 4 nuclear engines do not have enough thrust to lift my weight when I get to the surface so there would be no escaping. I have more than enough remaining fuel (approximately 5000 deltaV remaining) to go to any other planet I chose from here though.
