Have you guys not ever thought about what a steampunk world would look like after the coal runs out?

It wouldn't immediately be a punk world.
You can generate steam without coal, you know.

Kenshi looks like a little steam punk-ish, we gotta admit that, and coal should be a rather valuable resource. However, if coal runs out, will it still be a steampunk world? That's the problem. Actually, I wold LOVE infinite deposits that never ran out. If they wold run out of resources, the game wold never be fun anymore :( . WAIT    I JUST GOT AN IDEA! We can ALLWAYS prospect the same place for resources, each attempt giving different results! :D.

Maybe, resource mines can attract bandits or resource areas can have danger zones/risks.

Scenario:

Miner hits ore vein with pickaxe *randomly, gas is released from an exposed gas pocket*

10% of random explosion.

30% Miner becomes unconscious.

40% Gas harmlessly dissipates.

20% of MC Hammer time!

Resources should have some sort of risk to ensure that the player cannot over harvest in such little time. (However, the player should be able to research ways to lower said risk).

Just make ore really hard to get. Extract as much as you want but be prepared to have hundreds of guys mining (and requiring others to feed them via farms) just to get a significant amount in a reasonable time.

I can see this being a prime focus area for research to reduce tedium but also to supply the growing needs of a growing faction that needs to arm more and more people with larger and better weapons.

Everybody go to your nearest trader, right-click and then hover over the "robotics components".
I wonder what this might be used for?
Perhaps..

While interesting I don't need the help of robotic parts to limp.

I didn't say they don't say "It's some kind of virus." Or some other half assed explanation before getting back to using them as a metaphor for whatever. I said that they don't ever even try to be scientifically plausible. As in explaining why the zombies are driven to consume the flesh of the living (and only the living), or where they get all that energy to sprint indefinitely, or why the don't just fall apart after a few months from natural decomposition, or why there always seem to be more zombies than there were living people to begin with....
Modified Rabies virus is pretty decent. I mean, in these ones, they're not actually dead, they're just incredibly sick. They run so fast and ignore pain because they're rabid, and they're not decomposing. Actually, in 28 Days Later, they show the infected dying off due to starvation and dehydration.

Thank god they aren't thinking of making a 28 millenia later.

You can generate steam without coal, you know.

Not very Efficiently, and coal would be the only way to currently realistically power anything

I let you know, I have Steam and didn't use any coal to install it. Image

Yeah true, but I dont see that happening in a steampunk world, unless of course all of the punks became hipsters.... in which case humanity would no true fear... wait what if thats what happened in the kenshi universe... the coal ran out of a steam punk world... and then hipsters came and infected their virus to millions bringing renewable energy, tea, and microbrews to all... but at the cost of their fashion sense... and then the hipsters cleansed the earth of the its true plague... HUMANITY, now the survivors cling to civilizations remnants in a wasteland once known as California. oh and there's samurai armor and weapons because you know how cultural hipsters are. Or at least thats how it would appear to be in my head.
