I would like to put forward the idea of higher-protection on the armour and higher-damage on the swords for discussion.
As quickly comes to mind, there is no necessity for this to be in the main game, since modders will get good at tweaking the combat as time goes on. Thus, this is merely a discussion, for whether higher values on armour and weapons could improve the game.
Haven't seen if there was anything mentioned in a FAQ or the like, but I have honestly been wondering if this is already the intention of Chris. My reason for wondering this, is I noticed some of the items have not yet been balanced--such as the "chainmail hood" which has a higher price but a lower protection rating then a straw hat. This has caused me to wonder if there will be a large revision to stats across the board. Especially since limb replacement might be planned.
The main point of this discussion, of course, is whether there would be an improvement from increasing the armour and damage values.
Kenshi being the kind of game it is, I do feel a greater deadliness might enhance its moderately grim theme. One thing I would particularly love to do, is take on a large group of weak enemies, using tactics to eliminate them single-handed.

The chainmail headwrap isn't terribly useful, and does cost more than the straw hat, the grey straw hat is clearly superior. However, the blackened chainmail headwrap does have some usefulness, once you're raiding towns and such I find that the extra .8 resistance outshines the .064 dampening offered by the straw hats. Still, some balancing will take place no doubt.
As far as better armors being available, there used to be a number of plate armors that were far better than the medics sets that are the best things shops carry now. I don't recall the manufacturer but I do recall having some black platemail on my first crew when I first bought the game ages ago.
Edge Walkers blades were also much more common when I picked up the game, I believe that the goal is to allow people to procure decent gear from shops, but to have the "best of the best" we'll have to invest the time it takes to research and train a blacksmith and such so we can make our own outstanding weapons and armors. Of course, that's just my supposition, I haven't seen Chris say so or anything.

Looking forward to those items. In this case however, I'm referring to modifying the stats of the current items to be higher (i8n protection and damage). Kenshi has gone to quite a bit of trouble to simulate aspects few RPGs do, and be unusually realistic. For this reason, it would seem worth consideration to make combat deadlier, and armour stronger.
So the effect of buffing both armor and swords would pretty much be that striking someone in an unarmored spot becomes more deadly and important? That'd be interesting to see if higher combat skills allow for targeting of of specific parts. I do like the idea of having unarmored parts be more of a risk.
