As of now, I think my preferred spot is near brink. I like the look of it mostly, and it's easy to run to the city. Prior to that I had been building down in the caldera in the south, with 4 cities all around

I built my settlement in the middle of the region surrounded by Trader's Post, Part Soul, Eyesocket and Telbooze, right in that little elevation of rocks. Logically speaking, it's not a very good place to build upon - you have to really expand into the surrounding flat lands, which are usually populated by a bunch of desert bandits and the like - but it feels homely enough. I can fend off bandits left and right with my current team, and it's especially grown on me since my settlement was named after the first member of my group I ever lost in battle (very tragic and upsetting experience, BTW; I don't normally feel too sad, but he was the first guy I ever recruited, and I was imagining personalities for all my characters... )

I prefer the mesa's around Catan, I currently build on the one just infront of the entrance (easy to climb). When we get things like bridges and ramps there is another one I have my eye on, two tier mesa group.

i took a liking to a two-tier mesa west-north-west of Catan. there are no bandit raids whatsoever, plus it's only accessible from one spot, a natural ramp about 10-15 meters wide. so as soon as we get walls back, it can easily be sealed off, and with ramps and bridges to access the higher ground it has plenty of space for quite a large town.
i know it's a bit lame to just dig in like that, but my general approach to strategy games is the snapping turtle. get up as many defenses as you can grab, then pop out for the kill and crawl back into safety^^

EDIT: aaaand just as i finished typing and went back to Kenshi running in the background, the first two dust bandit raiding parties arrived. well, the first two in 4 hours, so i'm still quite fond of the place. plus they were reduced to whimpering piles of blood and entrails in a matter of seconds. 22 squad members are a nice thing to have.

Well, one thing I have noticed is that, sometimes they just do not show up. I THINK it has something to do with the invisible clip wall bug, ya know the one where you try to walk on the map and get stuck unless you save, quit, then load the game.

I have a theory that bandits as well as trader npcs (yes I know they don't buy stuff but they do normally come to town) get stuck on this invisible clip wall.

So if you play for HOURS and HOURS and notice that not a single bandit shows up, try saving, quitting, and then logging back in, and see if you get more badies to show up. Granted it won't be instant, but I have tried testing this theory a few times, and seems to be what is happening.
In the year 2065 the amount of cat pics on the internet will eclipse the amount of porn pics.

The mountain top across from brink. Usually out of way of bandits for the most part but still some action, and what a view! The wind generators up on top of that look amazing from brink.

I built mine by Clownsteady.

Looking back on it it probably was not the best decisions considering there are a whole bunch of bandits in the area and the only other settlement nearby is Clownsteady so I wouldn't recommend it.

If I were to choose again I'd probably build near Eyesocket

I built mine where i found a steady flow of both bandits and traders. Its near 2 towns and in a mountain pass,of which i walled off almost the entire pass.

This means all the traffic coming thru there ,pretty much has to go thru my gates to continue on thru the pass.I often have 3 trading groups in my town at any given time, and regular bandit groups wandering along my walls.

When advanced wall systems can be put up,without causing issues,i will have a concentric wall system, with multiple gates,so i will have control over not only the entire pass, but also the 3 routes to enter the pass.

I love Clownsteady. I built between that town and Brink. The large open deserts appeal to me. I have clear vision in all directions and am sufficiently isolated that I can do my own thing. There are also ample opportunities for my guys to train on local bandits in preparation for future patches that may ramp up the difficulty.

Just yesterday, I made a nice little settlement in between the four cities in the bottom. The way I figure it, it'd be a good idea to make one later down the line in between the 4 cities at the top. Once walls come back, I could even make a few settlements that are strictly sort of like border crossings. All I'd need before that could happen correctly would be the ability to handle multiple squads.

I build dead center between Clownsteady, Shark, and Brink. I like it here. Lots of bandits though.

I've set up an outpost just inland from Port Soul, called Sheol. A beautiful spot, nestled against the mountainrange to the south and facing the rocky field to the north. It's close to three towns and features the grassy highland as opposed to the sand-dunes to the north.

There's a bit of bandit activity there, but there's been nothing yet that my six fellows can't handle.

It's a beautiful corner of the map, and I get alot of NPC patrols through there. I have alot of hope for Sheol as soon as trading enters into the game. I'm allready stacking up the place with Rhum.

I built a farming community in the middle of Brink once. Didn't have to worry about bandits which was nice :).

How did you manage that, since you can't build within an existing city?

Between Skinner's Roam and Eyesocket is a Trader Outpost....I popped my little village to the west of the Outpost pretty much in direct travel route between the two cities...we do get bandits a bit, but not that bad.

I also tried a spot up northwest of Clownsteady/East of the Trader Outpost there....was ok place but I prefer the Holy Paladins from the south :)

90% of the map, pick a place.

I've taken to building all over the place, haven't really found anywhere that suits yet so every time I start I simply head off in a random direction till I find somewhere flat and lacking bandits.

I am kinda looking for a place on high ground overlooking and easy accessing the lands below.
But as you might know those places have been taken by the existing towns :)

Guess like you would build a castle(me having the high ground) :), you know the reason hihi...

Smiley, you should check the area around Catan. There is still a large swath of raised plateaus near and far from Catan itself. It's where I ended up building after killing some United Cities guards and relocating to avoid their continued attacks on my Brink outpost.
