End in Sight??
Hey there,
just bought Kenshi about 2 weeks ago on steam and I already think that it makes a lot of fun although it is still an alpha. But here is the thing, IT IS STILL AN ALPHA! Let me make it clear to you. I knew that it was only an alpha when I bought it and I thought nothing about that, because the feature list sounded great and I am someone who can wait in general. But as I heard that only one guy is working on that game and that the development started already in 2009 (ALMOST 4 YEARS AGO), I started to worry if this game is ever gone to be finished ?! So what's the timeschedule? When is the developer planing to be finished with his work? 1 year? 2 years? Another 4 years?
To point it out again, I already have fun with this game and I think the developer did a great job realizing his ideas, but it was quite shocking when I read that the development startet already 2009. So hopefully someone can give me a reassuring info about that.

No, but i didn't expect that is gonna be the next Duke Nukem 4ever neither. I can't understand why the developer didn't build up a team in all this years to get things done, there are enough people with skill who wants to be part of this kind of project.
Maybe because all it boils down in the end is money, or maybe he wants to finish the game mostly alone?
And duke nukem was started already in 1997 and published 2011, so Kenshi being made for 4+ years? Big deal, if it's two more years it's still not close to being a duke nukem forever.

Actually, this is how long it took to make all the good games back in the day. It took teams of 100s of programers 2 to three years to put out a nes game. Keep in mind that this is just one guy doing this. Its kinda why i stopped making suggestions on the boards, i realized (a little late)that unless it would be an "easy" fix, or if it wasnt to report a bug, it would be a little unrealistic to demand/ask for everything.
Whats nice is that this game is still very much alive. Its quite inspiring that one guy is able to successfully follow his dream and make a badass game by himself. i wish all indie's had the same result, but alas it cant be. I just hope that starforge would update(soon) with a save feature soon. But that's a different game programed by a group of knuckle heads.

Thank you for that insight Mcnasty, there has been this... thing around here that I haven't quite been able to put my thumb on. I think that nailed it. Good thing my thumb wasn't there..philthymcnasty wrote:... I do hope he raises his asking price significantly or figures out a way to loop us in for another round of funding after this current list of features is going. While I'm not sure I'd have paid more sight unseen, I feel like I robbed the man at this point.
I think at some point or another he's gonna have to cave and sub some of this stuff out. He's thinking about it based on his Steam blog post. He said something to the effect of not having enough revenue from Steam to hire anyone yet if I'm not mistaken.

besides, remember that hiring someone costs a shitload of money if you go for professionals. chris already hired someone in the past for a very specific task (the foliage iirc), and i think he'll hire someone else for the sound part
I know there used to be a donation button/method somewhere. And there's always the special editions too. I personally got the "create an npc" edition.Someguy wrote: I do hope he raises his asking price significantly or figures out a way to loop us in for another round of funding after this current list of features is going. Basically, alot of games are in production for aslong as 4-6 years you just don't hear about it straight away... this isnt the first and wont be the last to be in such a long production. The game will be finished and i can say that he does hire external teams he currently has a freelance 3d modeler working for him as hes a useless modeler
Its been his dream to release this game and he is in active development with the game on a whole i bought this game when it got greenlight in 2012 and i have followed development since then and hes come on leaps and bounds since then just because it doesnt look pretty doesnt mean mechanically it isnt good! just be patient and keep eye out for the updates.

Content is key. Content enables the player to experience/do more, which makes for better game.
Good example is DF(Dwarf Fortress).
In terms of graphics:
Number #3, on April 5ths list of priorities: "New character + armour artwork, better character customisation.. Will replace everything, probably leaving all your characters naked after the update."
In terms of Time:
Big company games usually are released faster than indie because they have to deal with pressure from their shareholders and their publisher. (Gothic III, is a good example of a rushed game because of this). By dealing with publishers and stockholders, the companies do not have time to focus on both graphics and content. (Which usually leads to games being released with a ton of bugs)
So in a way, a slower freelance project could yield a better 9in terms of content and stability) than a well known company. So in terms of time a small company will take longer, however the outcome will be worth the wait.
Examples of indie development:
Dwarf fortress:
Project started: 2002
First release: 2004
End of development: still in development.
Minecraft:
Project started: No idea
First release: 2009
End of development: March 21, 2013 (There could be more, who knows)
Meh, to lazy to add more.
In terms of donations:
Now in terms of donations, there is URL on the main page.
http://www.lofigames.com/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=67
It is not a true type of donations page, however there is a little flexibility in terms of payment options.

Ah so easy to tell the younger gamers from the older ones.
Most games come out yearly due to most being cookie cutter same ol same ol dog food that people just gobble up. Why innovate when you can diarrhea in a box and sell it for 59.99 retail not including day one dlc or patches that fixes screw ups or unpolished features.
No back in the day devs took their time and worked on passion projects sure some where utter garbage but atleast they where trying. Now publishers don't even try anymore and the devs are hung off their teet they can't create their games.
Thus Indie gaming seemingly shoots up because you have people who actually give a damn about their fans, and more importantly they care about the game they put out.

90s, the golden age of PC gaming. (A time when games were created by enthusiasts(and small companies), rather than giant rushed business)
I would say that indie game developers are setting gaming back on track.
Y2k, anyone.

Well, this is a good example of a pretty huge shift in the video-game industry for both the devs and consumers. A -lot- of games, especially further back down the timeline, have a development time spanning years. But, that fact generally wasn't (and still isn't) presented to gamers. The process entailed only the final product being available commercially to a consumer. Up until that point, there is zero contact. However, especially with the boon of indie-games in tandem with modern tech capabilities, the process isn't always as closed off as that. Such is the case with Kenshi.
As well, it's good to keep in mind that for the overwhelming majority of Kenshi's lifecycle, it's been a one-man dev team.
Time is the suffering variable out of that. But, to give my two cents on your question finally, yes, I think the game will be completed.

People get so uppity when they realize the game has been in development for as long as it has. They don't take the time to do a modicum of research, or listen to an interview. If they could be bothered to do so they might realize that when Kenshi was in early development Chris had to work a job as a security guard to fund development.
Now that the game has an increased income from the Steam early access and such outsourcing has increased, and Chris is finding someone worthwhile to bring in on things that can't be outsourced as readily. The bottom line is, Kenshi is Chris' vision, and he has striven to make the game regardless of whether or not anyone else wanted it. The game will be finished sooner with the added income, and Duke Nukem Forever is a ridiculous comparison.
DNF swapped engines every time new technology was available, was constantly being set back and set back and was the epitome of poor planning. Kenshi on the other hand begun its development cycle with Ogre3D before Unity and so many other more complete development suites were an option. Kenshi has been in constant development with regular updates, even when Chris had to find the time to work on the game while maintaining gainful employment in order to pay the bills. DNF squandered millions of dollars over a twelve year development cycle and in the end not a shred of code produced made it into the game Gearbox ground out in the next two years, even if the idiotic humor made its way into the game. It's like comparing the building of Rome with the Strategic Defense Initiative.

YOure thinking about this all wrong, we don't care about an end, we care about what stuff gets to us the fastest, right now I'd settle for
* Sound
* Females*
* Blood
*Dismemberment
With those four he has a game, regardless of the version.
By adding and focusing on the most pertinent features he can garner more sales for which can aid with hiring more staff or aiding with his development.
So don't worry, and complain and beg for the right thing so the game becomes more desirable. And moddable.

You know, by putting those four things together, someone might misinterpret some of your personality facets.
Chris pretty much does operate like that, though. He seems to go for adding in whatever he thinks is most pertinent/ doable at the time. We even have general, gameplay, feature request, and modding forum sections for complaining, begging, and modding. So worry not, the game is progressing just like you want it.

AAA game companies that produce games such as Assasins Creed, Diablo, Halo, ect, take anywhere from 1-6 years to produce. These companies have hundreds of staff members and normally work with other companies that specialize in certain areas. If an indie developer like Chris was to make any one of these games, he would die from old age before it was finished.
Indie games normally consist of 2d graphics, retro or easy animated/modeled, simply because it easier and doesnt take so much time for someone to do these things.
If you want good graphics, well designed models, nice working animations, and anything else that a "AAA" game might have. Then you gota pay for the staff, 60k p.a is the average wage for anyone working in the industry
this game is probably Chris's life, if you want to help the game get made faster. Go tell your friends about the game, or gift them a copy.
The world is nothing but an illusion of the mind
I truly do hope he raises his / her asking price significantly or figures out ways to cycle us set for an additional round involving money next existing listing of functions goes. Although I not really know I'd personally have got compensated much more picture invisible, I feel similar to My partner and i swindled he at this point.

I get the feeling that English is not your native tongue, that entire paragraph is frankly rather incomprehensible. Tuesday the patch will be out, and months of outsourcing will culminate in an impressive amount of additional art assets if what we've seen previewed in the past is anything to base a conclusion off of.Ludwiger wrote:I truly do hope he raises his / her asking price significantly or figures out ways to cycle us set for an additional round involving money next existing listing of functions goes.
