I seem to remember this being an issue with previous versions.

My character was carrying a ninja jounin and I made him drop the jounin, the jounin just vanished. I assume he dropped through the ground. The terrain was hilly.

if it's an npc, then that might not be the case. unconscious npcs will eventually despawn, but not if you're carrying them. so often they'll despawn as you drop them.

Yes, they do. In this case though, he had literally just been knocked unconscious lifted up and then dropped. So think it unlikely that he despawned - the whole sinking in the ground bit is something I have come across with items too.

Sometimes you actually still can pick up items that sank below the ground or are floating in the air. I have better luck when I make the camera look straight down and move the mouse left to right, slowly covering the whole area that the item could have dropped.

That being said dropping stuff is still a gamble, So I usually only do it after saving.

Well i tried to pick them up too, but to me they did not sank, they stayed in there lay on the ground or standing, but could not be picked up.
