No fast-travel

Fast travel in my opinion will ruin the fun in losing the danger of getting attacked by an enemy faction as you travel the world. Maybe instead of fast-travel you put in a mini-map which helps navigation a lot, and maybe bikes to solve "fast-travel" or whatever kind of vehicle you could take. If you have auto-targetting crossbows, im pretty sure you're smart enough to make bikes.

Or how about you just don't use fast travel?
You should know "just don't use it if you don't like a feature" never applies. If the feature exists they have to use it thus ruining the game for them.. At least based on every time I ever see this kinda argument..anduin_lothar1 wrote:Or how about you just don't use fast travel?
But on a serious note I agree they shouldn't add fast-travel for awhile, see how long distance traveling is.. (when the full world map is in and more content..).. Then if late game the distances are really making content less fun or to tedious (running very long distances taking a lot of time to accomplish little) - a form of fast travel could be useful.
If the long distances aren't an issue due to how content is handled, then we won't need it.
According to HaTsUnE_NeKo on the steam forums though they said no vehicles or mounts would be added.. So that is probably not an option.
I feel like though once we can have multiple squads.. We will just take a group and move to a new area and expand.. and hire new people grow the local area.. but leave a group in our early base/area.. and fast travel will be us switching between groups to do things in different areas..
Full abandoning bases, and moving tons of people to a new one to move to a new "area" seems to not be what the dev wants..
Once resource is area depended (so a base in one place can't get much or any iron but has a lot of farm-able land).. you will want another base where you can get iron.. which means running multiple bases - multiple groups.. ie no need maybe to travel great distances - outside initial moves.. and maybe trading resources between your bases....
So we more need ways to handle this stuff so we do not have to micromanage everything.. As it grows..
Maybe I am wrong though.. not sure..

personally i'm not looking forward to fast travel as well.
but we don't know what Chris has in mind for it, we do know its not gonna be your normal type of fast travel system. so ill wait and see and reserve my final judgment when i see it in action.

Majority of 'RPG' style games contain a 'Fast-Travel' function of one sort or another. It is sort of a shame too, for using fast travel to get from point A to point B by-passes encounters with enemies, potential allies and even area's that may or may not contain items of value.
To say that 'they have to use it' because its in there is just wrong. I have refrained from using fast travel options in almost every game. Though traveling from one country to the next on foot is a bit much.
Maybe refrain from making such bold statements in future. You don't know other peoples style of play so commenting on how they are going to play is just pathetic.
The fast travel option would be good for this game in some aspects. Especially with the possible map expansions that may well be headed our way. But to find a middle ground for it would be good.
Maybe have the fast travel option but throw in some random encounters along the way. Say if your travel path takes you through bad territory chances of encounters increase, where as travelling through an area more patrolled by soldiers and so forth the chances would lessen.

I am a Gamer. Not because I have no life. But because I choose to have many.
There was an extensive discussion about fast-travel on the steam forum, and I think I've come to conclusion that the only way you could make it even work (whether you wanted fast-travel or not) would be to use something like a speed multiplier... kinda like.. hey. guess what. The 4x speed.. That is your fast travel (though currently broken)... I don't see any point of any other form, as it detracts from a lot that the game is made to give.
I think the statement reply to the "Just don't use it" is valid, in that if you put it into the game, it's there, and it is far to easy to just get lazy and use it. I hate when features like that are put into games, because it ruins the game for me rather quickly.. It is just something you "fall into", rather than being forced to take your time and enjoy the passing scenery.
People don't understand how beneficial "prolonging gameplay" is. You want the fast travel? Enjoy becoming bored of the game after 1 week, because why do anything when you can just fast-travel through the entire thing.
Fast travel is like candy.. Tasty, but ultimately bad for you. And despite even knowing that, you'll still live off of it if permitted to.
--
With one of my characters on 4x speed, i can run from one corner of the map to the next in only a couple minutes. Does it really need to be "faster" than that?
There is enough going on in the game to maintain and pay attention to, that if there was some way of "setting a destination, and.. Go!".. A simple move order would be quite significantly enough, while you're off doing other things... So "it's boring running across the desert" is a poor excuse... Anything more than that and you're just cheating the system.

I can't imagine fast travel would work well. Does time pass when you're fast travelling, or is it just instantaneous? If time passes, what about your other characters who might have set up a base? Do they continue their production of resources? What if you suddenly run out of food or water and they can't produce any more without your orders? What if their base is attacked? What if you were able to fast travel from one corner of the map to the other over and over until you have a whole stock of stone or whatever other resource that your workers have been producing? And, on the off chance that "fast travel" would be instantaneous, that'd be too unrealistic. Imagine running out of food and then just being able to go to a town that might be a long distance away and returning with a feast in a few seconds.
With all these instances that need preventing I doubt Chris will be even implementing fast travel at all and let us keep using the fast enough 4x speed, but, as Hatsune said, it might not be a conventional type of "fast travel" at all. In any case, I think we can trust the dev to do what he thinks is best. Take a look at the rest of the game - all that stuff is great and he's mentioned things I might never have even thought of in the first place. Take a look at the planned medical system for example.

Agree with zeals post. Not a fast travel supporter myself. I think when you start a new game you should be able to select features that will be permanently in place for the whole game. Things like, hardcore mode, fast travel, and other things could be selections before you start. The latest xcom allowed you to not be able to save on the fly so you felt it when you lost a squad mate. no reloading a save game without losing alot of game time for an example.
Im a glutton for punishment, and get more reward out of a game for not cutting corners and taking the long road. Gives more of a sense of accomplishment IMO.

I say fast travel should be in the form of buildable buildings called "beacons" that are part of some of the higher tier research and require a lot of power.
...Oh yeah, have bandits and hostile factions be able to use it too and we'll have a game. How awesome would it be for a bandit raid to show up in the middle of your base because you didn't find out untill too late that beacons shouldn't be built in the middle of your base.
Hell, we could probably just say that they're ancient tech and have immovable versions of them surrounded by a religious order of Ancient tech Zealots.
Seriously though, if the map gets really gigantic, fast travel would be nice to have in the long run, even if it's in a very limited form it would save people time from walking across barren land for about 10 minutes on 4x to get to the next biome.

Exactly, that's why you have to haul a bunch of mats to a single location and build the damn thing for you to be able to fast travel there. (You could also have "ancient" beacons scattered around the world as well. In order to activate them you would have to acquire some sort of key and insert it into the machine at each point.)Hatsune_Neko wrote:but this is how i find all my battles. walking between cities at normal speed.
SURE! we could make it their defense mechanism that protected them from bandits and other incorrigible people that would want to destroy the device!Zeal wrote:Don't forget the multi-frequency lasers, and thermal shielding!
T_T ....
Seriously though, I bet there is variant of fast travel that could work for this game. I mean, it doesn't have to be in the form of "open the map and click on a previously discovered location" like in most games.
Think outside the sand ;D
Yes... it's called 4x speed. If ANY form of fast travel would work with the scheme of Kenshi, it could only be a speed increase.RighteousSinner wrote: Seriously though, I bet there is variant of fast travel that could work for this game. Only if the path finding overhaul fixes a lot of bugs with the current fast forward, and the AI during speed ups becomes a whole hell of a lot better, would that be a conceivable alternative. Otherwise, larger group combat would be impossible on slower machines, as the Ai doesn't keep up with the fast forward at a higher speed other then x2.Zeal wrote:Yes... it's called 4x speed. As x3 stands now, larger hostile groups can simply pass each other without any conflict, some followers of groups will stop following the leader until the speed up stops and the ai catches up, characters can go through walls, and sometimes characters can get stuck inside each other, requiring a game restart to fix.
No fast travel then.
Your argument is fighting "leaping through time, ignoring all activity" against "Broken AI" ...
There is a theme that Kenshi follows, and a schematic that Chris wants the game to play as. Both of which counteract any idea of "fast travel", being anything more than "just fast", with anything i've heard of so far. I had heard Hatsune say that there might be a fast travel... Until that's really been cleared up as to what that will be, I think it's pointless to even discuss it.
Teleportation devices, freezing time, etc... really?

There's a giant ass clock looking thing and another odd looking tech building in the background of some of the concept art, you tell me. http://nichegamer.net/?attachment_id=5924Zeal wrote:Teleportation devices, freezing time, etc... really?
The AI really IS broken at the moment as many bug reports will tell you.Zeal wrote:Your argument is fighting "leaping through time, ignoring all activity" against "Broken AI" ...

Isn't the point of suggestions to try and make the game more enjoyable for everyone?
RighteousSinner wrote: There's a giant ass clock looking thing and another odd looking tech building in the background of some of the concept art, you tell me. http://nichegamer.net/?attachment_id=5924
This is concept art from a freelance artist in russia. They also have art of highly advanced future looking structures, some of which have raised platforms. Ships, and other sci-fi elements. If this can be confirmed to be Chris' plan for Kenshi, I will both resign my argument and be utterly disappointed. But that is unlikely, seeing how it's labeled "environment concept art for low-end sci-fi MMO RPG titled Kenshi"
My claim about the AI had nothing to do with it not being broken already. You were complaining that the increase in speed breaks the AI's (which i have yet to confirm speed has any factor at all). I've posted large posts about the broken AI issues myself, so it's pointless telling me it's broken. You misunderstood my intentions. But ultimately, the AI programming needs to be fixed regardless, which renders your argument that increasing speed causes those issues moot.
Feedback and suggestions are apreciated, yes. But this is a dream game made by a dev, who's motivation is because he wants to create a certain game. Deterring from his dream game takes away from the reason he made it in the first place.

I can confirm it, it does break it. Enemies will bypass each other, go through walls (and over), and end up entirely inert unless the player interacts with them. See the attached screen. You were complaining that the increase in speed breaks the AI's (which i have yet to confirm speed has any factor at all).

This includes the dev too. Although the ultimate decision is up to him, trying to improve upon original idea and implement easier ways to do things is ideal. Also, if you really thought his Dream game was set in stone, why would you be here in the suggestions forum in the first place?RighteousSinner wrote:Isn't the point of suggestions to try and make the game more enjoyable for everyone?

- Broken enemies. They just stand around and do nothing unless you attack them. Don't forget the guard in the straw hat that just walked past them too.

Way to take things out of context there.. Read it again. The entire paragraph this time...RighteousSinner wrote:Too bad that still isn't a goal eh?sci-fi MMO RPG titled Kenshi
Here, since you ask that I break it down simply for you:
The concept art you linked is not official concept art of Kenshi that we know of. That concept art is labeled by the artist as I had said. "environment concept art for low-end sci-fi MMO RPG titled Kenshi"
You confirmed it yourself. Since Kenshi is not a sci-fi mmo rpg, then that is likely not concept art for this official Kenshi... If anyone is misleading.. It's YOU for posting that concept art
Clear enough?
Once again.... I am not saying that the AI doesn't break.
The AI breaks regardless of speed.
http://steamcommunity.com//sharedfiles/ ... =251413007
This is at 1x speed. I have had no issues with the AI being broken due to using the 2x/4x. It breaks on it's own. Speed disregarded. (on my system).
The other issues of things getting stuck on walls, etc is pathfinding issues that are going to be resolved with the new engine.
But ultimately, in one light you are right.
There's no point in me opposing your suggestions. That's up to the devs. not me. I just want people to understand a direction of Kenshi, so they can atleast rethink their suggestion. If they understand that, and still like their suggestion, then I'll leave it alone. I don't mean to carry on a conflict/argument.
