Hello everyone,

I have been rather busy lately, so haven't had much time to help test Kenshi. Had time today, so gave it a try. Ran into some major issues though.

So I have tried multiple new games (with different storyline starts) and have run into this issue on each one. After loading a save game, the game will instantly crash if I mouse over some entity. Anything that gives a tooltip will cause a crash. Oddly enough, not mousing over anything will leave the game running fine. Although my squad list is empty, and pressing the number buttons to go to one of my squad members also causes the game to crash.

I am playing the game through Steam. I have verified the file integrity, and everything checks out. This happens after running the game for random period of time. First time it happened was after about 15 minutes. Second time was after about an hour. If I had to guess, and this is only a guess, this issue seems to have only began after an NPC or character has had slave shackles put on them.

Unfortunately this bug leaves the Experimental version of the game in an unplayable state for me. Have not tested this out in other versions. I have attached the crash dump. One of the save files has been uploaded to dropbox since this is beyond my understanding. Hopefully someone else can take a look at this, see if maybe it is just a problem on my side. Here is the link.

Best regards,
Bancheis

EDIT: 11/05/15 GMT 15:08:00 - Additionally, I did completely uninstall and reinstall the game fresh, and experienced the same issue after about an hour of game play. I had saved and reloaded a couple times prior, and no issues. Then out of the blue, it just stopped working. Each time the crash happened, the squad members did not load in.

I have added a zip file that has the Nameless_1.platoon files of before when it worked, and after when it did not. Nameless_1(2).platoon is the more recent copy that is broken.

Interestingly enough, I deleted the Nameless_1.platoon file from the save, then put in the one that worked before. After doing so, the game worked normally and I did not crash when mousing over anything or any NPCs. The downside is I had no squad members. Also to note, the entire squad itself disappeared from the list of squads. So with no characters to move around, the game was yet again unplayable. Still, not crashing is progress.

Same here. Though I didn't get a crashdump. I did however get a crashhunter.log generated at the exact time I crashed. So I uploaded that just in case it's helpful.

This happens here too. I've noticed in the load menu when the save is broken, it sometimes says I have 0 members in my squad. I dug through the saves (Just looking with notepad++) and in two saves that in the load menu show 5 and 0 members respectively, the Nameless_1.platoon file is identical in both. Granted all I did was run a compare plugin in N++. Not sure if this helps.

Behaviour is exactly as described. No members in the squad, mousing over anything, or pressing a key to select a squad member, or clicking anywhere, crashes the game.

EDIT: I've noticed the save I have that shows 0 members has no save.log in its directory.
I loaded it, and tried resaving it to see if it's just that one save (My thinking was maybe resaving makes it work again,) and the new save has a save.log that lists 6 errors, all the same one.

Code: Select all

HavokCharacter::setPosition moved someone off the world
Sounds suspiciously like some people vanished, no? This is the limit of what I can do. I'm not a coder or a developer, just a nosy gamer. :P

EDIT2: The saves that I expected would load fine, actually load with empty squads too, post edited to remove the implication they worked.

That is really good info Asaguda! I am sure the devs can pinpoint the problem with that. Thanks for the input :)

That got me looking and I've discovered that my own afflicted save has no "Nameless_0.platoon" file in it. Where my working files do. I'd be willing to bet that's part of our problem.

Hopefully they can release a hotfix for this issue. Would love to play around with the new system, but this bug seems to leave the game in an unplayable state for many users.

Edit: Just to note, I added some additional information at the end of the initial post I began with. I found out something that may be useful in further troubleshooting and/or hotfixing.

the problem is happening at save time, but i can't figure out how. Does anyone have any specific steps that cause a game to save with "0" characters?

You may want to try doing the hungover ninja scenario, it happened to me most often when I was in a cage. Maybe it has something to do with jobs somehow?

Nevermind, I fixed it. You all had lots of KO'ed characters right?

May i join the club? It first happened when i reached Port South, moving part of my squad from Traders Edge. Squad is presented, i can move a bit, but something will still crash the game. I tried to import a clean save - doesn't matter, it still crashing :( Attaching a dump from last crash...

Not in the squad, no, but KO'ed NPCs, yes. Dying NPCs, NPCs in recovery coma, enslaved NPCs that haven't woken yet, you name it, I probably had it.

The only thing in common I've seen on my files were that they were all slaves or escaped slaves. I had ones where everyone was KO'ed and ones where nobody was. And everything in between.

But if it's fixed I'll be happy. :)

Same as above. Though some saves did have unconscious squad members, it was not always that way. They probably were injured in most (possibly all) of the saves though.
