I'm pretty sure that a guy with combat skills that are 80+ should be considered a master swordsman. Its kinda immersion breaking and pathetic when a master swordsman can't aim properly because he keeps hitting the limbs rather than vital areas like the stomach, chest, and head.
I'm thinking of a targeting system where you select where you want your guys to aim. Pop up a diagram of the body and click on the area you want your guys to aim for. A master swordsman should be able to single out a single body part pretty easily. Now I'm aware that a crappy swordsman would probably hit the chest when aiming for the stomach or something like that and that is why the word preferred is in the subject line.
Does this sound feasible or useful?
Preferred Limb Targeting System
While useful. if we're talking about a life or death fight. simply because you wish to target something. doesn't mean you'd be able to hit it because the person you're fighting is working an trying to prevent you from hitting them , as much as you are them.
fights are about 'instinct' more than they are about 'thinking' fighters generally don't have the time to stop think an be picky about where they injure someone.
while an Archer,or other ranged type would have time to hink an target generally fighting with swords is all instinct and training.
"hitting" someone where you want to isn't always a valid option. even if they're 'crappy' attempting to go a specific location ...
would eventually be noticed and would leave you more vulnerable because it would make you predictable. and even a bad fighter can take advantage of a 'predictable' master.
if we're being realistic where our characters are hitting is where they find openings to hit. which to me sounds like a 'preferred' target system already because they're preferring to take advantage of weak spots instead of arbitrarily aiming for spots that might not be open.
people see the word master and give it way to much credit. Masters are experiences sure. but being a "master" at something doesn't mean the basic rules of combat no longer apply. which is to create and exploit weaknesses in your enemies combat form.
the Stomach,Chest, and Head are vital the opponent in fights tends to know this. so those areas should and always will be hardest to hit because instinct is to protect those areas.

Oh my god, yes. I actually never thought of this, but its quite amazing. I want it for both Turrets and melee. Sometimes I really just want to shatter their limbs into paste and leave them to slug limp across the map until they die of mushlimb syndrome.
Although, in theory, this would allow you to be more effective at training skills as you could cripple and continually mush enemy limbs with blunt weapons almost indefinitely. That is simultaneously awesome and twisted. Very twisted.
