So, I downloaded the non-Steam version from the official torrent, then activated with my old key (new computer, so I had to activate again). Now every time I start the game it pops up a dialog with some German text (something about "software passport" I think). The game seems to run fine, but it is really getting on my nerves, particularly since the game crashes all the time and so I have to keep restarting it.
BTW: When the game crashes I need to shut it down via the task manager, and I can only get to the task manager if I switch to another desktop (using windows 10) as kenshi takes over the current desktop and will not allow any other window to show. "Stable"? I think not.
Also: I am getting tired of feeling like a second class citizen because I won't use steam, why doesn't the non-steam version update?
Weird startup issue (non-Steam)

it doesnt update because they are currently looking for new update software as the old one is outdated and wont support 64bit. give it time, they are working on the issue.
can you also upload your crashdump.zip files so the Dev can look at them.
the German text thing the Dev will have to talk to you about as i never heard of that issue before.

Once I get into the game the text is properly english, it's just that one (annoying) message box at startup. Would it be related to me not having internet on the PC that I use for gaming?
About not updating: I didn't mean an auto-updater, I mean a downloadable package with the latest version (the one that is "only available with steam experimental"). Not being able to use the latest version of a game I paid for simply because I won't use a third party launcher is stupid and alienating.

internet connection is not required to play Kenshi. so no clue. maybe take a picture of the popup with screen capture and post it here.
Steam is primarily the main area to get Experimental version because of the ease of access for the Dev.
this might change in the future, but don't know.
Kenshi already uses a third party software. Torret. mostly for ease of use and it can handle high data volume. that could be an option for the Dev to add an experimental version for non steam users. but its still gonna require an updater software which the Dev does not currently have. this is what the old wyupdater did.
Until this changes, for now Steam is your only option for experimental branch access.
