So I started a play through I'm calling my "Skeleton Crew". I picked the Freedom Seekers start and made 6 skeletons, all named after metals and alloys. I knew very little about the games lore before this, as this play through really got me interested in the lore, and I also knew very little about the actual mechanics behind non-human characters as I'd hardly found any recruits that weren't human before.
Boy was I surprised when 20+ paladins ganked my skeleton crew as they walked into town. I had to reload the save because that was just... brutal. I then tried to sneak one of my guys into town and he got fairly far, and then he was spotted and every man, woman, and child was beating on him with whatever weapon they had handy.
And then later on in my play through while traveling at 5x speed, a holy paladin patrol saw us and pursued us to the ends of earth (figuratively) until we were nothing but junk parts laying alongside the road.
Is it possible to factor clothing coverage into detection? I feel like if I could get my skeleton crew to wear monk robes, monk pants, and hoods they'd be a lot harder to immediately spot as being skeletons at a distance and maybe those holy paladin patrols would take longer to detect that they are skeletons. I could see this mechanic also factoring into characters with a bounty.
Just a Thought on Skeletons and Disguises
I feel you. I have a 10 skel crew right now. started the same as you did. they get along great with the hivers and outlaws. but I stay to the out skirts of the holy nation.
I have toyed with the Idea of hiring a human to act as a go between to visit the HN towns but haven't tried that yet.
I do have most of my squad dressed in HN paladin armor. A result of repeated patrol encounters. but the disguise factor doesn't seem to work because we can't wear helmets, shoes, and shirts.

It would be better if being seen was one thing, but what traits about you are seen was a different story. It could be affected by distance, maybe the Perception attribute? So if you're far away and wearing robes, the paladins might not notice you're non-human or female. If you get close, they're more likely to.
I think that would open up a lot of fun doors for gameplay.
