Could it be possible, when you hire mercenaries/bodyguards, to have them set as "friendly" at least temporarily? The same way when you help some characters the cursor turns green(maybe it's just relation going up) and your attacks don't touch them.
The reason for that is that currently mercenaries aren't that useful IMO, unless you have only a few characters and they are very weak: if you want to fight alongside them you will hit them and they will turn on you immediatly. At least that's how it goes in my play throughs (maybe it depends on the weapons).

Yes, they are definetely following and protecting my character. I don't have an outpost though, so I only recruited them as bodyguards.
That's weird... because the same applies to pretty much any neutral NPC(but it's not a problem since they don't follow you and don't get in the way). Or maybe it's a bug and not supposed to happen?

you cant friendly fire in melee. If you hit them, it means something else made them hostile to you. THis certainly isnt a common occurrence with hired mercs, so if there's any other info you can provide like who you were fighting, where when what, etc, it might help.

Well you're right: as it turns out I have a relation of -0.2 with the mercenary guild.
I thought this was a consequence of the fighting but actually it seems to be the cause. (I tested on a new game with a 0 relation and there was no FF, I might have to test again on my other saves).
I probably looted a merc a while ago to have this relationship. It would still be nice to have them forget a slight negative relation during the contract. Or just have it set to 0 :p
