Are lanterns safe to use?

I remember there being an issue with replicating. Is that all sorted now? And do they help with the darkness penalty, if they do function properly?
I would love to give my workers one each, to help production and to keep an eye on where they are.

They have fake light - a player with a lantern equipped still receives the penalties working at night. Torches and campfires behave the same.

I'm here to save the day, my dudes, and to settle rumors once and for the next update!
Here's a screenshot:

Upper part shows character's cooking stat in a non-lit building at night, with no lantern equipped. Bottom part shows the same stat with lantern on the belt.
So these don't eliminate the penalty completely, but make it less painfull for sure.
Ta-da.

Nice! Thanks for the replies.
Good to know they do make a difference, even if it's only slight. It makes sense. I've worked in the dark before with industrial lighting and sometimes you still can't see bugger all.
Mainly, I just wanted to use them as a beacon to show where my workers are (as they often get attacked, being in Obedience). I know you can have names on, and that will show them. But when I take out leveling parties, it's just a jumble of names and I find it annoying. Anyhow, good news about lanterns! Now time to find some.

Ha, I already went there and found some. Was looking for Ancient Science Books and Robot Repair Kits. Was in the vicinity, and remembered they appear sometimes in Hive Villages. Managed to get a few lanterns, just going from one to the other. Thanks, though! So nice to be able to see what you are fighting at night.Sol Lignum wrote: ↑Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:15 amCheck traders in Hive villages, they should have some in stock
Haven't come across many caravans. I don't spend a lot of time on the roads, as the Holy Empire is -75 with me (custom start, Skeleton-only game) so even though they might not be around, I've taken to staying off the path. At least until I can take on groups of Paladins.WhatTheDuck wrote: ↑Mon Mar 05, 2018 11:30 amOr try to buy them from a hiver caravan with a super duber special discount

Glad I took the stroll to the Villages then, if that's the kind of service I'm going to get from caravans! Although, not many people will come to Obedience I would imagine. It's a bit of a dodgy area, with the (modded) Broken Skeletons wandering around.

Oh, well. It was a good idea while it lasted. Just seems to crash far more regularly now. Every hour or two, like clockwork.
Never seem to get this to run properly (at least without regular crashes), in the years of trying to play since back in the old Desert. Yet some people barely crash and have far worse setups than myself. Logic?
Could be the mod changes I've made. But to be honest, none of it is what I think could constitute as extensive work. Just small tweaks, for QoL things. The only "large" change would be the Obedience stuff. And it crashes when I'm not even there, and before I even made it to the area to build. So I don't know what is going on. Once again, I get into a game and just can't play. Sure, I could restart constantly, but it becomes annoying and I'd rather not throw my keyboard across the room.
I really think there is some form of GPU issue with this game. It'll run perfectly fine for a while, then just die randomly. I've got a GTX 980, can run practically every modern game on Ultra, with very little FPS loss, crashing, and only needed to make .ini tweaks for Bethesda games (as the engine is shockingly-bad). But haven't ever been able to play this without constant CTDs, runtime errors and non-responsive messages.
Guess I'll just have to leave it until the game is finished and some performance changes have been done. Back on the shelf it goes for another year.

Don't know about NVidia, but with AMD I turn off every single feature - Shaders Cache, Open GL Triple Buffering, etc. - in the settings and my game became way more stable. And the steam version seams to add the wrong path in the AMD Setting to Kenshi_X64, so do it manually (I guess it adds the old path, not the new x64 version).kevinflemming wrote: ↑Wed Mar 07, 2018 1:07 amOh, well. There are a few settings that Inspector still has on (such as shader cache), so I'm going to turn them all off and just try to play un-modded. The only options I tend to change, are single display and maximum performance. Aside from, as I mentioned, Bethesda games, I rarely have to tinker so much with settings.Kwikwilyaqa wrote: ↑Wed Mar 07, 2018 2:07 amDon't know about NVidia, but with AMD I turn off every single feature - Shaders Cache, Open GL Triple Buffering, etc. - in the settings and my game became way more stable. It always runs perfectly fine for around 25-30 days, with possibly one or two crashes. I've never managed to reach a full year, as it gets on my nerves too much and I quit playing again. But this has turned into a bit of a whinge about performance, when it was about lanterns. Bit off-topic, so let's leave it there.
