basically i think it'd be nice if there were a menu where we could tag our outpost, for NPC to find. based on the kind of NPC we want to attract.
for example if i wanted to befriend, outlaw factions, or escaped slaves. i could check a box, it would let the factions whom i choose to be friendly toward know that they're welcome. and this would allow them to come into my settlement even if they didn't join , perhaps we could eventually if its added designate a place where escaped slaves could live , an they could gradually become NPC citizens of the town.
but even if NPC never officially start living in the town. just having more foot traffic an a way to befriend factions by simply being accepting of them i think would be nice. kind of a way to set your relations toward them. this shouldn't mean they'd be friendly to you just that you're offering them an olive branch. and if you do help them when they come to your village, with things like Food, Medical Supplies, maybe some basic equipment/clothes. even going so far as to protect them from pursuers who might come to the gate an demand you give them back, or are 'searching for them' . which would boost/hinder your relations with one an the others.
Like if you're in the border zone between the HN , and the united cities. and you choose to Allow/Welcome the united cities into your town. but forbid the HN you might see wounded UC personnel approach your town an ask for refuge/protection. then a day or so later you might have HN personnel come along demanding you turn over the UC .. this could allow you to establish friendship with the UC, or the HN if you turn them over and of course drastically effect your relations with the other if you refuse. or you could opt to 'remain neutral' . by refusing both of them access.
atleast thats something i think the flag system could lead to but..in general i just thought it'd be a nice thing to do since its what i've been wanting to do when i restarted recently.
since i keep seeing slavers go past my out post. and wanting to give the slaves shelter if they were to manage to escape. (with my help until they are able to escape on their own atleast) .
the longer the flag is enabled, the more serious other factions would take it, an this would allow you to build a reputation based on your settlements flags. but perhaps expanding on it perhaps you could also set flags to represent your factions political policies.
like
Does your faction approve of Slavery? if you check the box yes/no , then the longer its set the better chance that other slavery opposing factions might send envoys to befriend you. and of course factions who approve of slavery might send envoys threatening you, or if that didn't work a raid. which would give raids a plausible reason other than 'just some random player challenge' .
and if we ever get NPC groups that operate in out settlements like an NPC army that represents the players faction( don't think thats likely but sill) it would/could dictate the behavior of the npc. after all if we're able to become a rising power on the island/continent then it stands to reason that we would want to show where we lie. and have a way to attract the kinds of people to our settlement(s) that we want there.
Outpost Flags - not that kinda flag.

Dangit! Why isn't there an endorsement button to show your support for this idea without hving to make comment to say that you do? Also it would also be cool to make the ideas with the most votes show up high in the requests list. It would make it easier for the devs to see what people people are interested in.Chinsei wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:57 pmbasically i think it'd be nice if there were a menu where we could tag our outpost, for NPC to find. based on the kind of NPC we want to attract.

Similar system were implemented by Red5 for their Firefall MMO. Didn't go so well, as you might knowTerrorofKenshi wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:28 pmDangit! As for the OP idea, it's good indeed, but i doubt it'd work in the current scope of Kenshi. Right now you have to consciously do something big to affect your faction relations with others, and ticking boxes would just add a non-involving mechanics where stantings would just tick by themselves.
well it wouldn't have to tick by itself. since its just kinda setting your acceptance of a faction , so they might be more willing to 'accept' your presence, and might be more willing to offer you chances to prove yourself.Sol Lignum wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 12:59 pmSimilar system were implemented by Red5 for their Firefall MMO. perhaps when ticked they could generate a few dynamic events that would occasionally test your resolve to what you have flagged your outpost for.
like if you are against slavery. maybe on occasion a slaver faction might come to buy your 'prisoners' if you opt to sell them then people might come to distrust you because you said you were against slavery, an then you turn around an sell people into it. or Anti-slavers might insist you let the people you have prisoner go. because its 'inhumane' or something like that.
un ticking the box , should of course have repercussions an the game should check eveyrday if the box is checked or not(game day) , that way you can't uncheck it when its convienent, an get bonuses from it when you decide temporarily unchecking it , is better than keeping it.
After all if you flip-flop on issues a lot people aren't likely to trust you, or take you seriously. and if you go against your established code/policies then people should call your integrity and trust worthyness into question. which would make it harder to get them to deal with you .
i don't think it ticking up by itself is inherently a good idea because you'd just set it an forget it , an you'd start benefitting from it i think it should just act as a way to indicate where you stand to other factions. and this would allow them to choose actions to take toward you. from asking you for help with things you support. to launching attacks on you for the things you oppose. all the events would of course some with a relations effects the more serious the request the greater the effect on relations.

I'm not really an MMO so i don't know what Firefall is. What actually happened? You made me kinda curious now.Sol Lignum wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 12:59 pmSimilar system were implemented by Red5 for their Firefall MMO. There is no need to for a player to tick a pro or anti slaver box though.Chinsei wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 1:17 pmlike if you are against slavery. maybe on occasion a slaver faction might come to buy your 'prisoners' if you opt to sell them then people might come to distrust you because you said you were against slavery, an then you turn around an sell people into it. or Anti-slavers might insist you let the people you have prisoner go. because its 'inhumane' or something like that.
Your example here works just fine without a box to check, it does not really matter if you state that your settlement is pro or anti slavery, the moment you start dealing with slavers favorably the game can give you better relations with them, and because those slaves you sell them have to come from somewhere it'll cost you relations with others.
We especially don't need a box for pro or anti slavery if we had a way to manage faction relationships, simply make an enemy out of any slaver factions and befriend the factions that fight slavers to show your anti slavery conviction, or vice-versa if your pro slavery.
I don't know about the checkbox thing. Mainly for immersion. How does the UC (for example) magically know what you checked? So I think the idea is better handled through dialog. Go out an seek a UC official and inform them. Depending on the exact nature of what you;re doing, it may be more "persuasion" than "informing" them. Find slavers and make a contract to sell your prisoners (they'll come to you if you can meet a quota). Stumble upon a possible refugee and offer your base as a home, etc.Chinsei wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:57 pmbasically i think it'd be nice if there were a menu where we could tag our outpost, for NPC to find. based on the kind of NPC we want to attract.

There is a mod that sort-of does that last bit already. I think it works out pretty nice, except they don't do anything complex - they just sort of patrol - and you do loose them on each import. But it demonstrates how that can work well. And I think that part kinda works well with this idea.
Although I was thinking about checkboxes anyhow as I typed this, and I could at least see your characters using spoken dialog (overhead text) with regard to this. A slaver walks towards your outpost and they say "Slavers aren't welcome here." Which the slavers could then leave (probably) or get themselves into a fight. One way or another, it just sounds better when you communicate these things rather than them magically knowing your policies. Also it should do this with regard to your outpost being public/private, or individual buildings being public/private. The NPCs already do tend to tell you to get out of a private building. Your characters should do the same.
I can definitely see more choice/action-based diplomacy effects. More than just bashing heads. While I think most of it should start with dialog, you could screw that up by not backing your words with actions. Like telling an anti-slaver faction that you hate slavery, but selling prisoners to slaves might get back to them. But doing things like attacking Slavers and/or freeing slaves would demonstrate your resolve.Chinsei wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:57 pmbut even if NPC never officially start living in the town. just having more foot traffic an a way to befriend factions by simply being accepting of them i think would be nice. kind of a way to set your relations toward them. this shouldn't mean they'd be friendly to you just that you're offering them an olive branch. and if you do help them when they come to your village, with things like Food, Medical Supplies, maybe some basic equipment/clothes. even going so far as to protect them from pursuers who might come to the gate an demand you give them back, or are 'searching for them' . which would boost/hinder your relations with one an the others.

Also I know FCS has a trustworthiness attribute for factions, but I don't know what (if anything) that's used for. But that seems relevant.

This is a really cool idea.
A really really cool idea.
I mean you'd still have to deal with taxes and raids from cannibals and stuff, but maybe you could change faction relations based on how well you accommodate the needs of visitors

I'd say leaflets, sign posts, banners, all kinds of things that we don't see but presume the AI in the world must see to explain it's behavior.bk3000 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 12, 2018 8:33 pmI don't know about the checkbox thing. Actually I would prefer dialogue options with visitors that allow us to welcome them and improve relations. Then have visits based on the reputations with factions. The better your rep the more visits you get from allies or them more bad visits you get from enemies.
You could also add buildable items like flags or statues that would increase/decrease your rep when seen by certain factions. like the statues at worlds end. They might just be there to placate the nearby factions. or they could elicit a direct response like flying the UC flag in HN territory.

I like this idea as well. it kind of goes hand in hand with pretty much the same thing I was thinking but instead of making a separate topic it fits well here and this is more detailed and specific than what I could say.
I essentially just wanted to suggest a way to get more traffic in and out of your settlements that are "public" and also allow you to build houses that you can put up for sale and have different NPC's move into your town, I would like to see a way to build a commons building that would be free for people who wanted to move to your settlement but also for those who can afford it you can sell individual buildings in your settlement to NPC's officially making them a resident and even allow NPC's to decorate their houses/buildings they purchase and even allow for shop owners to move in and turn one of your buildings into a shop and it would get a sign and be decorated automatically by the NPC who bought the place. also allow you to hire guards that are not part of your faction per say but NPC citizens and you would need to build a barracks to hire guards and you could craft and color a uniform that your guards would wear that you would provide in your barracks.
you would need to be able to fully equip someone with your uniform and you could make different uniforms for different settlements you own or you could make them all the same.
you would pay the guards a salary and would even be able to build a police headquarters that your guards can put prisoners in. you can either be anti slave and choose not to allow them to be slaves or you could sell them off to be slaves depending on what you want to do but this would effect all of your settlements not just that one.
bringing your settlements to life with NPCs as citizens and even being able to hire them to do specific jobs but you can't control them directly and people can choose to move in or leave.
lets say you have a guard that decides to leave they would return their uniform to the barracks before quitting and you would no longer pay them. you could tie this to moral say for example your uniform is a bunch of low quality garbage and they keep getting beat up they might quit and leave and not want to be a guard anymore they can choose to do that. but if you provide them with good gear and they are winning more fights they will have higher moral and be willing to stay working for you and even tie in your relations with each individual so the happy they are and the more they like you and your settlement they would lower their cost and eventually if they really like you and your settlement they might even decide to work as a guard for you for free.
one of the things I was bummed out about in Kenshi1 was that you couldn't get a shop owner that you could buy and sell goods to, to live in your settlement being able to have NPC's living in your settlement and still go about their business I feel would be a really cool improvement to the world of Kenshi
