I tend to favour the plate armors supplemented by a mail shirt underneath, I got the feeling that the tradeoff of having generally higher damage reduction in exchange for copping the odd nasty blow that slips through probably comes out slightly ahead in terms of damage reduction, though I haven't crunched any numbers, so this is solely based on instinct.

Plate, because you have to protect the vitals man.(Damage reduction) If there was an active dodge ability then it would be different. (If weight factored in)

I rather have better coverage then protection, also once weight come into play the lighter armors will be just a good or better, also I would never walk more than few miles with a medium plate armor on my body in the steaking sun I would get exhausted even before the fight began.
But if I was peparing a siege of a fort I would ofc rather have heavy protection for just that battle but everywhere else? Naah I stick to the longcoat, I feel better as a person to know im not gonna get cooked alive. (then again heavier armors makes you more sluggish, mark not implented in the game yet)

Eggs and bacon.
Marching into a battle or during a siege or even just a routine patrol would see you using armor. But gallivanting around the countryside in heavy armor? Nah you'd probably just wear something light and pull out your heavy equipment before a fight, if you have the time.
That's actually a very thoughtful choice. If there is a fatigue system added into the game later then this will be a consideration. Anyone who is wandering about the desert for long periods of time won't be wearing the heavy armor all the time.gusmil wrote:I rather have better coverage then protection, also once weight come into play the lighter armors will be just a good or better, also I would never walk more than few miles with a medium plate armor on my body in the steaking sun I would get exhausted even before the fight began.

I do hope that some negative that makes this viable is implemented especially if he made it so that equipping items took a certain amount of time based on weight (for armors at least) because I love the idea of getting ambushed (wierd I know) and not having time to get my good armor on and shielding some of my guys with a screening force while they get suited up, it'd be so damn tense which is awesome. But gallivanting around the countryside in heavy armor? Or worse your guys finally equip their heavy armour, but its too late and they have too flee. How far are they going to make it while running in heavy armour in scorching heat and under attack. (insert Monty Python clip here). Now is there a possible "you are not allowed to equipped/un-equipped whist being attacked" feature to be implemented? (Like Baulder's gate II or Oblivion).

i agree with the fatiuge thing but the long coat would make dodging as difficult as plat armor cause of the length of the coat, now some sort of harden leather vest would make more sense cause its clothing that will move with you.
i also agree that plate armor wouldn't be the best thing in the desert.

Welcome back Wolfwood296!
Wait, what about chain mail with a long coat overlay? It is not as heavy as plate, but offers more protection than a trench-coat alone. When I think of long coat I think of the western duster jackets (from Fallout). In terms of dodging I really do not think that it would affect too much. (Unless the character has a really long/puffy coat). Oh, for plate amour the newbies would carry it in their packs until the time of glorious battle. (Unless ambushed). Hold on, the current plate is not full plate, but rather a plate add-on to and existing clothing. (It does not have the tin-can coverage)

there is chain mail in the game, but a combination of long coat and chain mail would be a nasty surprise to anyone trying to stap the guy lucky enough to be wearing it (the chain mail would most likly stop the attack since a normal assasin would just think its just a coat and not hit hard enough).

Cutting chainmail or leather would be a poor idea but stabbing could still be very dangerous. It's very possible to pierce mail and leather however stabbing maneuvers are harder to pull off in combat. There's also the alternative of just crushing everything under the armor with a blunt weapon.

If the character has the unfortunate experience of dealing with multiple opponents a back-stab could be very likely.

True, so mabye a heavy garment isn't the best idea, you could also have no armor and just rely on speed instict. this would help the weak char that is outnumber, out gunned, (out sworded sounds weird) and out manuvered escape to fight another day

Outmatched may be a better term, and yes in most games that have realistic weight penalties (or even unrealistic ones) it generally does come down to deciding if you're better off with more (heavier) armor or less armor but higher speed/dodge abilities.
The way I look at it usually is that its better to not get hit at all than to mitigate damage but generally you need to skill up a bit before you can reliably dodge attacks so the nublets get heavy armor and the older more experienced guys slowly get weened down to almost no armor so that they are nimble

But... wouldn't a noblet who wears a heavy armor get used to wearing heavy armor and when one strip that away he will be just as a noblet in dogding... because he never dogded before as he havn't been able to because of the heavy armor.... No?

Well, the nublets would be weak (and also cannot block) so they would need their "training armour" to keep 'em from going under. The veterans would have XP (and a formidable blocking skill) so they can slowly wear less and less (Because their experience compensates for the armour's protection(I.e. the blocking and fighting skills)). Though dodging would be better than armour, the unit would have to stay in good health or else fail. If by chance your unit somehow breaks a leg then they probably will not be as nimble, (maybe even slower) and then all it takes is a few hits (Whereas armour would have dampened the damage). Also that is why nublets need amour. So long story short, if you ever encounter Prezo's army and see a naked man, you run like hell!
But when raiding a settlement you WILL need amour. Why, because when the gates shut and a volley of arrows are headed for your position, somebody is going to wish they had worn amour.(Can you really dodge a volley of arrows, probably not) However, the guy scaling the wall to open the gate, would not want heavy armour. So you will need to balance the amour/dodge based upon what you will be doing, one style will not fit all needs.

Pretty much what he said^
I like the idea of striking a balance between skill armor and speed, heavy armor should probably also slow down the speed of your attacks.
history lesson time, in the west especially the Normans used long kite shields until they developed leg protection that worked then their shields trended to be smaller until they resulted in the little heater shields, the same can be said with other shields as the armor got more protective and heavier shields trended to disappear and eventually were replaced by the knights in heavy armor using two handed weapons, this was for two reasons, one that there's not much benefit from using a shield when you are clad head to toe in plate steel, and two that the only weapons that could really hurt one of these guys in normal combat was a two handed weapon. Mind that didn't stop the development of the bodkin arrow which was quite deadly to plate armored enemies and if you could trip a knight over you could sometimes cave his skull in or slit his throat before he got up (Agincourt comes to mind although there the french were using extra heavy armor and the ground was a quagmire)
the reason for that explanation is that if its balanced heavy armor should be a formidable sight just have the weaknesses of decreased endurance and speed (there's a reason knights were commonly mounted) but those weaknesses are made up for by the protection afforded to you and as a means to combat some of the weaknesses the amount of damage you can lay out with a big F off sword/ mace/ whatever.
I'm not very good at this whole not writing a wall of text thing am I?
