I feel like an idiot and I need help

So I've come back after a couple of months of not playing kenshi and decided to make a new save, and after a couple of hours of training my new character I save and go to bed. The next day when I tried loading the save it crashed the game. After loading and crashing for a third time I realize there's a problem with the file, reluctantly delete it, and then made a new save. Same story. I did the file validation steam offers, still crashes. Reinstalled the game, still crashes. Came here, found out it's a common problem and deleted the kenshi folder first before reinstalling. Still. Fucking. Crashes

Any advice? Because I am at a loss

Have you tried removing any mods? The game hasn't been that crash happy for me in many years, which makes me wonder if you've got some mods not playing nice or something.

Since it crashes when loading the save, have you tried importing and resetting positions? That would identify if the crash is regional based or not.

And lastly, upload the dump after the crash. Even if it is a vanilla issue, it will likely never be fixed if you don't upload the dump.

Yes I do have a couple of mods downloaded from steam, though if I'm being honest I don't know how to remove them
On importing I have tried importing both saves but not resetting positions, but I doubt it's a regional thing as they're pretty much on opposite sides of the map

Also what exactly do you mean by the dump?

It's probably apparent that I'm not very tech savvy lol, but I appreciate the help

Alright I don't know if my other post that I posted twice is here as I can't see it but I've removed all my mods and just need to figure out where to upload the aforementioned dump to

I'd still suggest trying an import with reset positions on. You're right that it's unlikely to be regional with it happening so far apart, but it would not be impossible for the bug to be affecting more than one area, so it would still be worth trying.

Forgot to mention in the previous reply, don't worry about the posts not showing up. New users get caught in an approval queue for moderators like myself to check and make sure they're not spam bots (we've had a lot of problems with them in the past). Only the first posts generally trigger it, and after we've approved enough of your posts the system will stop flagging them by default.

So whenever you're not sure if the post has sent, you can be sure it has. It's just hidden and awaiting one of us to look at it. All the others were there too, I was just removing the duplicates for simplicity's sake.

Basically it contains a bunch of information about the crash that the devs can look at and diagnose the cause. If it's something on their end, it lets them know what, so they can fix it.

So I've been able to actually load into games now, but the game has a habit of crashing randomly, on top of the came being suddenly incapable of overwriting saves, meaning I have to make a new save every time I save

Aight, just to elaborate, the saving and loading is fine (besides that I can't overwrite a save), but I seem to now just crash whenever I go into some areas

Problem is they seem to be random and spread out everywhere

And I can't think it's mods as the only world editing mod I had was take over the world which essentially adds an important npc to every settlement that when you kill them, leave the area to reload and come back will give you the town
I got this one specially to take over ruins in places I liked that I otherwise couldn't

But even after removing it I crashes still occur
So I am again at a loss

Status update, my saves are not appearing in the FCS or game files, yet they still appear in game

So it seems something fucked with my save files overall

More than likely the saves are simply in the new save location.
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\kenshi\save

A couple patches back the default save location was moved there to avoid issues. Though the old location still exists, and can be toggled back to in the options menu.

Note that the appdata folder is hidden by default, so you'll have to enable viewing of hidden files and folders if you try to navigate there.

Did you enable the viewing of hidden files and folders? As mentioned, it will not be visible if you didn't.

As for an ETA, unfortunately there isn't one to give. And even once they do check it, it's not likely they will respond here unless it's not an issue with the game itself (if it's a mod or hardware problems for instance).

If you want try and stop the crashes without waiting for a patch, you'll need to start doing some experimenting yourself to try and locate the source. First thing I'd try is turning off the user save location in the options menu, as that's the biggest change since the last time you were playing (and I assume it wasn't crashing back then). Other than that you could try tweaking graphics settings, see if turning any of them down/off stop it from happening.

Status update

Been messing around with graphics and settings and still no progress. In all honesty I might just have to put the game down as the crashes make it literally unplayable (Can't rp an explorer if you can't explore) and I really don't want to. Partly because I love the game and partly because I don't have anything else that can engage me for long periods of time like it can. It's just really damn frustrating as I've never had problems with the game in the past and I don't know what the hell changed

A bit more info on the crashes, they seem to be area specific, as I have to cross an arbitrary line before it crashes
Problem is they seem to be everywhere

If it's area specific, then my first thought would be corrupt overlay files, but your reinstall should have fixed that.

What areas is it so far?

Maybe upload a save and I can go test whether it crashes for me too? If it crashes for me, that would mean something is wrong in the save's data, which I can test and investigate myself. If it doesn't, then there is something wrong on your side, either settings, hardware, etc.
