I just upgraded to a new (to me, with factory install) computer, and Kenshi keeps crashing within about 5 minutes or so. It's a CyberPowerPC from BestBuy, an upgrade from my Nitro 5 laptop. The game worked fine on my laptop, but not so well on this new one. Kenshi has crashed by itself a number of times, but it's also crashed my PC a couple times, forcing a restart.

I've tried doing a clean install (uninstalling, deleting the folder, re-downloading), but that didn't seem to work. I tried giving myself full permissions as a new owner... I'm having trouble getting the "special permissions" box checked, but I have permission for everything else. It's possible I could have goofed on those steps, but I tried both of them a couple times, so if that's the case, maybe I'm just a bit thicker than I thought...

I didn't think to save any of the previous crash dumps for comparison, but I could probably produce a couple more if that helped

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks :)

I don't see anything of note in the dump. First things I'd try are the following.

1. Turn off all mods, and import the save. Does it still crash?
2. If so, try turning off distant town loading in the options menu.
3. Try a new game, see if it crashes.
4. If it doesn't crash on new game, try an import without buildings as a test. If you have a base you don't want to lose, just don't save for the moment after import, just see if it works.

Well, I've run into a couple other problems while doing miscellaneous other tasks by now, so it's probably not Kenshi itself that has the error. I think it just ran across whatever corrupted files/etc. there are earlier than anything else I was doing. If I get everything else working and Kenshi is still having problems, I'll update, but until then, I do appreciate you looking into it Shidan.

Edit: Sorry, should have commented on your suggestions. I'd tried different settings and configurations enough that I'd given up trying to load a saved game for the moment, and was working on a 5-10 minute old save file (which I guess is still loading a saved game... I'll test how long a new game can go and see if that makes a difference, but then again, the reason I saved it 5-10 minutes in was because it kept crashing, so...). Generate distant towns is/was off. Anyway, just wanted to add that I did do what was suggested.

Edit 2: Also, no mods to speak of.

I've done some trouble shooting and have achieved more stability on my PC, but I'm still having issues with Kenshi. It just crashed on me after going for about 20 minutes, which is a lot better than it previously was, and other errors have mostly disappeared from the PC, so hopefully the crashdumps will actually have something useful. For a while, under View Reliability History in Windows Maintenance, the problem event name was APPCRASH, which seemed promising as far as narrowing down the cause goes... but that doesn't seem to produce a crashdump file. I did get the problem event name BEX 64 a little bit ago, which I'd seen before and couldn't quite troubleshoot, so that's the crashdump I'm posting now. Again, I do really appreciate the time and help :D

Still no obvious sources of the crash in the logs. I do see some errors popping for distant towns though, and some for zone files. So I'd have to suggest some of those tests from before again. Make sure distant towns are off, and test a new game or import without buildings to see if it clears up crashes.

Checking the dmp with WinDbg shows an access violation error. But I honestly have no clue how to read it very well.

Did some googling on the error code (0xc0000005) and came up with this from a microsoft page:
Application Error 0xc0000005 (Access Violation) error is usually caused by your computer not being able to correctly process the files and settings required to run a particular program or installation. Despite the error showing when you try and use particular pieces of software, it has many different causes including faulty RAM problems, errors with the files of your PC and issues with the settings of your PC.
In this case, we suggest that you check for corrupted Windows system files. System File Checker (SFC) is a utility in Windows that scans for corrupted Windows system files. If it finds a problem, it will try to replace the problematic system files from a cached version that’s on your PC.

To run System File Checker (SFC), follow these steps:

In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt, press and hold (or right-click) Command Prompt, then select Run as administrator > Yes.
At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and the /). Scanning will take a few minutes.
If SFC finds corrupted files and replaces them, restart your PC and check if the issue persists.
So maybe try its suggestions?

Thanks again. The "faulty ram problems" had shown up as possible diagnosis for a couple of the errors I'd looked into, and it turns out that was the issue. I just took one of the two 8GB sticks out, and it works like a charm. Cheers for the help. And now, to the game!
