Amateurs, I would use a defensive tactic known to many martial arts experts as....the curl up in a ball tactic.

Hello

I am French and I practice a martial art that is ninjutsu.
Ninjutsu is complete and extremely effective.
(Acrobatics, projections, fighting with bare hands, keys, choking, hitting with fists vital strikes nerves, broken bones, maniments all melee weapons, ranged weapons, ground fighting, stealth, climbing ).

The Shuko (scratch on the palm of the hand) can be used to parry a sword before against attack.

Dodging, rolls are also useful.

I bought the game and I congratulate the team. ;)

As someone who practiced jujutsu, if we were to be serious and think in terms of realism martial arts would compliment swords/other weapons but not really be used by themselves(at least not intentionally). Some benefits could be bonus "critical hit" and/or dodging moves. And of course if disarming was implemented it would play a part in that.

In any case, I look forward to seeing how Chris will implement this.

Empty-Hand Martial Arts seems more appropriate for people who focus on stealth, ninja characters and such. In and actual battlefield you could wear hand guards (Or The Shuko the Frenchman Previously Mentioned) to deflect blades with the back of the hand, then go straight for the kill. But the fights in this game aren't really like that, for an empty-handed person to fight a man with a blade with any amount of reach you need to close the distance straight away and kill them, or disable them instantly, drawn out fights aren't going to work in your favor since you'll have twenty other douche bags on your ass instantly with no real way to block multiple attacks.
The skill name 'martial arts' doesn't really mean that there will be empty-handed fighting anyway, seeing as martial arts includes many different weapons and thousands of different styles for each weapon.

What if your martial arts skill was used even when you were holding a sword? Like, wrestling, elbowing, kicks, etc.. If disarming became possible, it'd make unarmed combat skill much more desirable.

Well, as I said, martial arts can mean anything, from empty-handed combat to different styles for different weapons, so I suppose this is practical.

if you're going to discuss effectiveness or tactics for unarmed fighting against swords you need to look into what they teach in kendo.
a part of their training is unarmed revolving avoiding and most importantly disarming/taking the enemies sword for themselves.
Ideally if you were going to fight someone with a weapon you need to put that weapon out of the equasion or ake control of it for yourself.
things like cresent kicks to knock things flying out of hands or certain wrist manipulations/grapples to easily take the sword from them.
there will be proper tactics for unarmed vs sword because it would have been a possibility when swords were still used - hopefully chris will look in the right places to implement themost realistic thing.

This is a good idea but I think it should be a skill mostly for stealth units that focus on 1v1, cause otherwise I could make every single one of my soldiers martial artists and they would block every sword and instantly KO everyone and everything... there has to be some sort of drawback to balanced.

I think a highly skilled *insert master here* is 'fucking pro'. Swords, fist or other...does it really matter.

On one hand I think the sheer speed of hand and foot attacks would make someone effective against a heavy weapon user in the right circumstances, but against a light knife or blade wielder you would be hard pressed to survive if fighting someone of similar skill or above. Does chris want to implement some sort of rock/paper/scissors counters system in the game? I don't know. Maybe just make everything balanced and let the player have some fun instead.

Wouldn't really work for a weapon triangle. "Martial Arts < Martial Arts with Weapons"

Weapon triangles tend to be annoying, since they force you into a Pokemon style of play (there aren't many reasons to have an all fire or all water team, in pokemon).

Indeed. Thats why I think everything should have its own balance and just let us play around creating dudes armed with what we feel is fun.

Yeah. Different weapons have different attributes (greater speed, more damage, better armour penetration, etc.), and some will be more useful in certain situations. Just that you can generally manage with all spears just as well as with all swords, if you use them properly.
